GENERAL PURPOSE
The Alumni Peer Tutor will be responsible for a broad range of activities that support the academic advancement and success of students at Duke University's School of Nursing. The tutor must be able to provide a conducive and supportive learning environment, tailoring their approach to meet the individual needs of each student.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Alumni Peer Tutor must be a Duke School of Nursing graduate with a strong academic record, demonstrating a GPA of 3.5 or higher and a grade of B+ or higher in the courses they wish to tutor. Proficiency in the subject area(s) to be tutored, excellent communication skills, and a positive recommendation from a faculty member in the course(s) they wish to tutor for are essential.
WORKDAYS/HOURS
This is a part-time position with a commitment of at least two hours of tutoring per week. The role is partially remote, with days and times to be negotiated between the tutor, program coordinator, and students (tutees). A commitment of at least one full semester is required, with the opportunity to continue in future semesters.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct individual and group tutoring sessions, ensuring the material is understandable and accessible to students. Develop customized study materials and strategies that cater to the unique needs of individual students or study groups. Foster a supportive and empathetic learning environment, encouraging students to ask questions and seek help. Stay current with the content and teaching methodologies of the courses being tutored, collaborating with faculty to provide the best support to students. Attend meetings and provide updates on the progress of students, identifying areas for further focus and the effectiveness of tutoring strategies employed. Maintain detailed records of tutoring sessions to track student progress and adapt strategies as necessary. Complete mandatory online training modules to stay updated with the tutoring best practices and Duke University's School of Nursing policies. Uphold and promote the standards and policies of Duke University's School of Nursing in all interactions. Assist in other related tasks and activities in the Student Success Center, enhancing the overall academic support services
