Hours: 40 hours, full year round
Salary: £25,126 - £25,667 per annum pro rata
**This role is fixed term for 6 months to cover long term sick**
MAIN DUTIES:

Working with children;

1. Ensure staff are well deployed, within ratio and teaching and learning is of outstanding quality.

2. Support the embedding of education programs, routines, and teaching practices to enhance the children’s learning.

3. Ensure the environment is always welcoming, activities are planned and set up appropriately to ensure children’s learning and development flourishes.

4. To plan for children’s learning and development needs by providing stimulating and age-appropriate play and learning experiences both indoors and outdoors.

5. Assess and report on the development and progress of the children, provide support to other staff within the setting as they work through the process. Review and develop the curriculum and activities available to children to ensure a high standard of education is maintained.

6. Assess the cohort data and implement strategies to close the attainment gap.

7. To supervise children, assessing risk, to protect them from dangerous or harmful situations.

8. Encourage and foster positive relationships with parents, carers and guardians to work in partnership to meet children’s individual needs. Offer support and guidance and ensure parents/carers are regularly involved in discussion about their child’s progress.

9. Regularly use the Nursery Management Information to update parents on the exciting activities and programs the children and setting are working on.

10. Review, monitor and ensure the Nursery Management Information System is in line with the policy and holds up to date information on the children.

11. Act as a key person or back up key person to a group of children if needed.

12. To be aware of any special educational needs or disability a child may have and work with other staff as appropriate to ensure each child’s individual needs are known and met.

13. To provide a learning environment that is free from discrimination where each child is listened to, valued and respected.

14. To assist in the preparation of snacks, ensuring that all children’s dietary and cultural needs are met, and consideration is given to allergy requirements.
Operational;

15. To manage the setting and undertake all the necessary duties in the absence of the Manager.

16. Ensure that the team is always following relevant legislation and OFSTED requirements.

17. To adhere to the Alliance’s safeguarding procedures to promote the welfare and safety of children within the setting. To discuss any welfare or child protection concerns immediately with the Manager.

18. To ensure that accurate records are kept and reviewed. For example, accidents and incidents are recorded as outlined in the policies and procedures.

19. Monitor the environment ensuring that children are always kept safe. Carry out daily risk assessments and act when necessary, to ensure a safe environment.

20. As part of the Nursery Management team, make decisions about immediate care of children. Keep the Manager informed of any concerns and needs of the children and participate in planning strategies to support their families.

21. Develop a working understanding of the nursery budget, to ensure that the setting operates in an effective and efficient financial manner within its set budget. This would include fee collection, debt management and the use of agency and flexible staff.

22. Be confident in using various IT packages for recording and monitoring.

23. To support the manager with appropriate marketing of the setting in the local community using various platforms such as Day Nurseries, website, word of mouth, social media and the Nursery Information System.

24. To arrange and attend parents, carers and guardians’ meetings to allow two-way discussion on child’s progress on a regular basis.

25. To liaise and work in partnership with other agencies, both statutory and voluntary, where appropriate.

26. Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to implement the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential Criteria:

1. It is a statutory requirement that: “staff have a sufficient understanding and use of English to ensure the well-being of children in their care.” Section 3.26, EYFS (2014).

2. A minimum Level 3 early years education and childcare qualification (e.g. Pre-school Learning Alliance Diploma in Pre-school Practice, NVQ 3, or equivalent) as seen as full and valid by the DEF, and a commitment to obtaining further qualifications as appropriate.

3. Post-qualification experience in working in early education and childcare.

4. Ability to help the Manager to manage the setting’s resources to ensure expenditure is in line with its budget.

5. Ability to inspire people to deliver results, high standards and sets clear objectives for self and the team, taking appropriate and timely action to ensure targets are achieved.

6. A sound understanding of child development and children’s needs with an ability to plan and implement the curriculum in accordance with the Early Years Foundation Stage, taking into account the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice, safeguarding procedures and equality & diversity considerations.

7. The ability to establish rapport and credibility with staff, external agencies, mothers, fathers, guardians and other carers.

8. Ability to communicate in writing by being able to produce clear, concise and accurate reports and correspondence, e.g. for disciplinaries, business plans, child protection/safeguarding reporting and for recruitment purposes etc. using Microsoft and other computer packages.

9. Ability to help the Manager, effectively market the setting to maximise occupancy levels and fee income.

10. Experience of co-ordinating curriculum planning for a childcare and early education settings. Ability to communicate the need for quality and continuous improvement, and influence good practice through example.

11. Ability to be pro-active, reflective and self motivated.

12. Ability to remain calm under pressure and able to multi-task.

13. An ability to develop partnerships with mothers, fathers, guardians and other carers in respect of their own needs for advice, education and personal development.

14. Able to recognise the signs and signals of child abuse and safeguarding concerns and have knowledge of what to do to protect children and safeguard their welfare.

15. To be aware of the harmful impact on children of discriminatory experiences and ensure that children feel valued and respected for who they are.

16. Demonstrable a detailed knowledge of current legislation relevant to the Early Years.

17. Able to work as part of a team and on own initiative. To demonstrate professionalism in approach to managing all issues.
