The MCS/ECMO department (Mechanical Circulatory Support) is a small department, comprised of approximately 30 RN & RT staff. Our staff comes with a variety of experience from the neonatal, pediatric and (adult) cardiothoracic intensive care units. Team members are responsible for maintaining heart and lung support devices on the most critically ill patients. We support pre- and post-transplant (both heart & lung) patients, as well as post-cardiac arrest, pulmonary illness (COVID, influenza, RSV) and congenital heart defect patients.
We currently have 27 full- and part-time staff in our department. When bringing new staff onto the team, we typically hold week-long classroom sessions which include introductions to ECMO equipment, physiology of ECMO and hands-on “water drills” to improve confidence and competency with the devices.
