ECMO Program Clinical Manager

The RN ECMO Program Clinical Manager oversees a team of RN and RT ECMO specialists in the management of patients on VA or VV ECMO. This position functions in a supervisory capacity and is responsible for staffing, program development, education and training. The RN ECMO Program Manager works closely with the Advanced Heart Failure physician team to provide the highest level of cardiovascular care to critically ill patients.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

Serves as clinical advisor for nursing staff and respiratory care technicians within the ECMO program. Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through consultation, formal and informal education, and review of current literature for self and other ECMO specialists. (essential)

Works with a team of healthcare providers to improve the quality of care given to patients. Meets regularly with the Clinical Director to plan and facilitate patient care improvements. Ensures that evidence-based medicine is followed for the particular patient population. (essential)

Oversees the development, implementation and coordination of clinical pathways, guidelines and protocols in collaboration with the Advanced Heart Failure/ECMO physician leaders. (essential)

Assure that there is coordination and execution of the patient care strategies through all phases of the specialty service. (essential)

Identifies and implements operational and quality program improvements. Initiates program development projects that may include data collection, quality metrics and adherence to state and national guidelines. (essential)

Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the program administration. Collaborates with program leadership and members to identify other program/department needs. Recommends and implements modifications to improve effectiveness. (essential)

Assures adequate staffing and develops staffing models including call requirements to support the service. (essential)

Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities. Has authority to undertake or recommend the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: More than 7 Indirect Reports: 21-50

Assists in planning, monitoring and/or managing budget in functional area of department.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing required.

License Registered Nurse required.

American Heart Association – Basic Life Support Certificate required

5-8 years related work experience required in nursing experience. At least 2 years ECMO experience. and 1-3 years supervisory/management experience required

Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a teaching hospital and specialty area expertise.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Age based Competencies: Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 - over.

Social/Environmental Requirements:

1. Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work.

2. Work is varied every day and the employee needs to be adaptable to respond to these changes and use independent judgment and manage priorities.

3. Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions

4. Several times a week:  Protective equipment required(Respirator,earplugs,mask,gloves,eyewear etc), Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or airborne pathogens, Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or bloodborne pathogens.

5. Health Care Status:  HCW1: Regular, day-to-day contact; both face-to-face and hands-on (having close contact within three feet for at least five minutes). Examples: physicians, clinical nurses, phlebotomist, medical assistants, PFT tech, and x-ray tech.- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department

Sensory Requirements:

Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Color vision/perception, Visual monotony, Visual clarity > 20 feet, Visual clarity

Physical Requirements:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus

This job requires frequent Power Grasping using both hands, Fine Manipulation using both hands, Keyboard use.Rarely there may be Pushing/Pulling using both hands.
