Ecologist – Mid Level – Regulatory Specialist (Hybrid)

Job Description:

Summary:
The person in this position will work with scientists, engineers, and other Barr staff members to evaluate ecological and regulatory constraints primarily associated with wetlands and biological resources and prepare reports and applications required for project implementation. Work may include conducting wetland delineations, hydrology and vegetation monitoring, and functional assessments and natural resources inventories; completing reports based on field findings; developing permit applications; preparing environmental impact assessments and restoration plans; and consulting with regulatory agencies.

This is a full-time position with hours varying based on project and client needs. Applicants seeking both full-time and part-time work will be considered.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in ecology, wetlands science, biology, botany, or a similar natural resources field

5 years of professional experience related to the job responsibilities described above

Experience with wetland delineations and permitting under the Clean Water Act

Knowledge of federal NEPA and state equivalent regulations and permitting processes

Knowledge of GPS and GIS tools and basic computer skills

Ability to work cooperatively with local, state, and federal regulators

Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a part of project teams

Strong written and oral presentation skills

Strong interpersonal skills

Strong attention to detail and organization skills

Flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedules to meet project commitments

Willingness to travel for occasional short-term, out of town assignments

Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future

Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in ecology, wetlands science, biology, botany, or a similar natural resources field

6 or more years of professional experience related to the job responsibilities described above

Experience with arid wetland ecology and permitting in Western regions

Proficiency in wetland delineations and permitting under the Clean Water Act

Proficiency in federal NEPA and state equivalent regulations and permitting processes

Willingness to perform additional fieldwork (e.g., stormwater inspections that require training and potential certification; water quality monitoring; flow monitoring, etc.)

Knowledge of state and federal endangered species programs

Experience with preparation of Environmental Assessments (EA) and/or Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) 

Experience working in a consulting environment

A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Farmington, New Mexico, or Durango or Pagosa Springs, Colorado, offices.

Compensation: 

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $70,000–$95,000/year. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a “no retained earnings” model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
