**Job Summary**
The Sustainability Office is seeking Garden Stewards to support the Edible Campus Gardens program for the 2025 season. The Edible Campus Gardens mission is to engage the campus through garden-based education and urban food production to foster environmental stewardship, community resilience, and belonging on campus. The Edible Campus Gardens program is part of the Sustainability Office, which empowers students, employees, and the broader community through education, engagement, and collaborative action to build a sustainable future.
Stewards will work independently and collaboratively with our team of faculty, staff, and student employees. Work will include maintaining the physical garden spaces, managing volunteers, supporting programming, and serving as student representatives for both the program and Sustainability Office. Stewards will learn professional skills and grow their understanding of sustainability at the University of Utah.
Stewards work throughout the garden season over spring, summer, and fall, roughly March-November. Opportunities for winter work may be available but are not guaranteed.
This position is open to all majors. This position is work-study eligible but work-study participation is not required.
**Responsibilities**
Contribute to campus culture of sustainability, positively represent the program and office, and foster a welcoming environment.
o Support and facilitate educational opportunities including, but not limited to: volunteer sessions, garden tours, tabling events, workshops.
o Amplify and support education and engagement efforts related to gardening and/or sustainaility through tabling and other activities.
o Respectfully engage with the campus community including students, staff, faculty, administrators, and visitors.
o Maintain clear communication with fellow stewards, leadership, and volunteers.
Steward physical garden spaces using ecological techniques to keep space productive and pleasant:
o Self-start projects, identify work to be done, and follow directions in task management software.
o Maintain garden space through tasks including, but not limited to: weeding, planting, turning soil, working the compost system, harvesting, delivering harvests, and managing pests.
Support safe, effective programming.
o Follow all guidelines and safety protocols.
o Safely and effectively perform all physical tasks essential to the position and understand the physical commitment required for gardening.
o Participating in meetings and professional development opportunities.
o Record accurate data according to program needs.
o Maintain equipment and storage areas.
o Safely operate equipment common to the trade.
o Follow food safety standards.
Other duties as assigned.

**Minimum Qualifications**
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. Garden stewards are expected to commit to the entirety of the growing season.
Must be a currently enrolled, full time University of Utah student. This position is open to all majors.
Work-study students are welcome to apply but work-study qualification is not required for this position.
Work environment and level of frequency typically required:
* Near constant work outside including in varied weather conditions: inclement conditions, heat, cold, precipitation, etc.
* Near constant standing, reaching, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching: overhead, at shoulder level, and below shoulder level, gross and fine manipulation, stooping, and both near and far visual acuity
* Regularly lift and carry 50 pounds.
**Preferences**
Strong candidates will demonstrate ability to work in an outdoor setting with minimal daily supervision, effective communication skills, strong organizational abilities, interest in peer leadership and/or education, and ability to work independently and with a team.
