Summary About the Position: Carlisle Barracks is an installation at the center of the Army and Department of Defense Senior Leadership educational programs. This historic post supports missions such as the U.S. Army War College, including the Center for Strategic Leadership, Strategic Studies Institute and USAWC Press, Dunham U.S. Army Health Clinic and the Installation Management Command. This position is being filled under the Direct Hire Authority for Post-Secondary Students and Recent Graduates. Responsibilities Copy edits complex manuscripts on topics related to strategic landpower, contemporary military issues, national security affairs, military history, international relations, and precepts of leadership and management. Ensures software styles, publishing standards, and English grammar are applied consistently within a document. Researches information using library resources and electronic sources. Serves as the primary point of contact for world-renowned subject matter experts and other stakeholders throughout the editing process. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: To be eligible for consideration you must meet the definition of recent graduate as defined below: Recent Graduate: a person who was awarded a degree by an institution of higher education not more than two years before the date of the appointment of the applicant. Exception: For a person who has completed a period of obligated service in a uniformed service of more than four years, the degree may be awarded by an institution of higher education not more than four years before the date of the appointment of the applicant. In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant education and experience. GS 09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Assisting with editing manuscripts using proper grammar, writing rules, and/or style guides; 2) using current desktop publishing software; AND 3) assisting with gathering information from libraries and/or online resources. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Journalism, English, or Communications. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS 11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes1) Editing manuscripts using proper grammar, writing rules, and/or style guides; 2) using current desktop publishing software; 3) gathering information from libraries and/or online resources; AND 4) recommending changes to improve clarity of manuscripts. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Journalism, English, or Communications. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
