Education Specialist/Standardized Patient Educator

The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center (JHMSC) is dedicated to supporting the growing use of simulation methodologies in health professions education and professional practice. JHMSC provides consultative and supportive services for simulation-based curriculum development and delivery, assessment, faculty development and system integration for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) and Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH), and Johns Hopkins Hospital System (JHHS) entities as well as external clients. JHMSC also seeks to improve provider safety and patient care quality through simulation-based research.
We are seeking an **_Education Specialist/Standardized Patient Educator_** who will report to Simulation Education Program Manager and will be responsible for educating, preparing, and supervising Standardized Patients (SPs) and Teaching Associates (TAs) to deliver high-quality educational and assessment programs across all learner levels at the JHMSC. This includes coordinating with faculty subject-matter experts, scheduling learners and SP/TAs, training SP/TAs, implementing teaching and assessment activities, providing feedback for both learner and program development, remediating learners as needed, and participating in continuous quality improvement. The position involves comprehensive oversight of SP/TA recruitment, training and orientation, case development, clinical skills training and assessment preparation, periodic evaluation, and feedback delivery. The Standardized Patient Educator will maintain detailed SP/TA activity documentation and work closely with faculty and staff to ensure the program meets educational and assessment objectives.
**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**
_Standardized Patient and Teaching Associate Training and Supervision_
+ Participates in the recruitment and hiring process for new SP/TAs.
+ Educates and prepares SP/TAs to deliver accurate, consistent, and high-quality clinical education and assessment, ensuring they meet curricular requirements and objectives, including both case-specific and general training sessions
+ Oversees the scheduling of SP/TAs for events and trainings.
+ Ensures appropriate delivery of feedback to learners during educational and assessment activities.
+ Monitors the quality of SP/TA case portrayal, provides feedback to improve portrayal where needed, and engages in continuous quality improvement to ensure accuracy and consistency.
+ Oversees SP/TAs during educational and assessment events, providing ongoing guidance and support.
+ Maintains up-to-date documentation on SP/TA training, performance, and professionalism.
+ Conducts regular training to ensure an adequate pool of SP/TAs is prepared to participate in events.
_Curriculum Development and Implementation_
+ Collaborates with faculty subject matter experts and JHMSC colleagues in the development of instructional methods and evaluation strategies.
+ Contributes to the development of pre-briefing, debriefing, case scenarios, and assessment tools for use in SP/TA-based teaching and assessment activities.
+ Contributes to curricular improvements, working with faculty and staff to adapt educational and assessment activities to optimally meet learning objectives.
_Standardized Patient and Teaching Associate Program Evaluation_
+ Ensures SP/TA performance assessments are consistent with the program’s goals and objectives.
+ Monitors SP/TA progress, evaluates their performance during SP/TA sessions, and delivers constructive feedback.
+ Collaborates with faculty and course directors to review SP/TA progress, identifying areas of improvement and implementing remediation plans as needed.
+ Participates in SP/TA assessments, providing both formative and summative feedback to faculty and students.
_Standardized Patient and Teaching Associate Program Evaluation_
+ Ensures SP/TA performance assessments are consistent with the program’s goals and objectives.
+ Monitors SP/TA progress, evaluates their performance during SP/TA sessions, and delivers constructive feedback.

_Educational and Assessment Event Management_
+ Maintains up-to-date records and documentation for all SP/TA cases and events, using shared software platforms as stipulated by JHMSC leadership.
+ Maintains medical equipment and other program resources needed for the implementation of SP/TA activities.
+ Coordinates all logistics for SP/TA sessions, ensuring smooth operation of learning and assessment activities.
+ Oversees proctors, event assistants, and scheduling assistants, ensuring timely and correct completion of all tasks assigned to these individuals.
+ Manages the scheduling of learners and SP/TAs within SP/TA activities, ensuring smooth event flow.
+ Implements learner accommodations in accordance with institutional policy and federal law.
+ Coordinates and implements remediation activities as needed.
+ Monitors and coordinates with the Operations Manager to ensure SP facilities and equipment meet safety, quality, and educational standards.
+ Maintains a supportive, equitable, and inclusive learning environment.
_Teaching and Instructional Support for SP/TAs_
+ Teaches clinical techniques, such as history-taking, physical examination, communication skills, and empathy, to the SP/TAs.
+ Delivers step-by-step instructions to SP/TAs, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
+ Provides both verbal and written feedback to SP/TAs, using established methods of constructive criticism.
+ Assists in the continuous professional development of SP/TAs, providing refresher training and ensuring they remain current with the latest clinical practices and assessment techniques.
_Project Management_
+ Collaborates with faculty subject matter experts and JHMSC staff to facilitate the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of SP/TA activities, ensuring alignment with academic and institutional goals.
+ Manages a diverse portfolio of SP/TA based educational projects.
+ Coordinates with multi-disciplinary teams including faculty, technical staff and administrators to deliver effective SP/TA events.
+ Contributes to the development of materials to support policies, procedures, operations, and accreditation.
+ Collaborates with the Simulation Operations Team to optimize resource allocation for efficient project execution.
+ Troubleshoots and resolves issues related to SP/TA activities, logistics and or technology to ensure smooth program execution.
+ Collaborates with the Administrative team to develop project proposals.
_Advanced Healthcare Simulation Education and Leadership_
+ Remain up to date on best practices for SP/TA education.
+ Supports SP/TA-based research and participates in dissemination of findings as appropriate.
+ Engages in simulation community leadership through memberships in regional consortia and/or roles in simulation societies.
_Supervisory and Reporting_
+ Supervises the activities of SP/TAs during assessments, ensuring compliance with training protocols and clinical skills standards.
+ Participates in SP/TA Hiring, Orientation and On-Boarding processes.
+ Reports on program progress, challenges, and SP/TA performance to the Simulation Education Program Manager & Director of JHMSC and other key stakeholders.
+ Ensures that all SP/TA activities are aligned with the Simulation Center’s mission, goals, and policies.
**Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**
+ Proficiency in training and leading groups of adult learners.
+ Familiarity or willingness to learn JHMSC software management systems.
+ Proficiency in simulation technology and tools, including audiovisual systems.
+ Strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
+ Strong problem-solving skills within healthcare settings.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and maintain confidentiality.
+ Proficiency in technical and computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
+ Strong customer service orientation.
**Physical Requirements**
+ Must be able to work in a stationary position.
+ Must be able to move inside the workspace to access equipment and traverse between different workspaces to support simulation activities or perform other duties.
+ Must be able to operate, prepare, inspect, and repair equipment.
+ Must be able to position self to maintain equipment must be able to transport equipment, weighing up to 40 pounds.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Associate's Degree.
+ At least two years of SP/TA program or related educational/healthcare experience.
+ Knowledge of medical education practices.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Bachelor’s Degree in healthcare field, education, fine arts, or a related field.
+ CHSE certification or eligibility to obtain within two years.
