EssentialJob Functions:
• Provide expressive and voice interpreting for students who are deaf orhard-of-hearing in general education classes (this may include American SignLanguage,
English-based signs, Sign-supported speech, or oral interpretation).
• Provide tutoring services as necessary for students who are deaf or hard ofhearing, under the direction of the DHH teacher or the classroom teacher.
• Accompany and interpret for students for field trips, assemblies, programs,job training and other activities as deemed necessary throughout the schoolday.
• Use scheduled preparation time (comparable to teacher preparation time) topreview lesson plans, audio, video and written materials, conference withteachers or
fellow interpreters, adapt tests and other materials, prepare for tutoring,record data, research signs, etc.).
• Participate in each student’s IEP team as a member, not as an interpreter.The interpreter may share observations about the student’s present level ofperformance,
goals and services, particularly related to the student’s language knowledgeand use, and behaviors that support or impede learning.
• Assist teachers in adapting the physical classroom setting to optimizecommunication interaction and access for students who are deaf or hard ofhearing (i.e.
appropriate seating, lighting, video equipment, removal of distractions, etc.).
• Serve as a liaison to promote good relations between students who are deaf orhard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.
• Serve as a liaison between the DHH teacher and the general education teacher.
• Provide note taking services, as deemed necessary, when not interpreting.
