Educational Support Coordinator/Retention Specialist
Union County College is a public comprehensive community college providing quality, affordable, accessible educational programs that serve the greater Union County region. It is the oldest of New Jerseys 19 Associate Degree Colleges, serving both career-minded and transfer-oriented students since 1933. The College enrolls almost 30,000 credit, non-credit and continuing education students and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Many programs lead to the Associate in Arts, Science and Applied Science degrees. Campus: Cranford General Description: Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities on all three campuses designed to address retention initiatives through the Academic Learning Centers. The emphasis for the position will be on identified high risk courses, developmental courses and/or targeted cohorts. The incumbent trains tutors to work with the special needs of identified high risk populations to improve student retention and persistence. Works with the Director to develop the services of the Centers to student needs with particular interest in basic skills. Characteristics, Duties and Responsibilities: · Develops activities, workshops and materials designed to address the needs of high-risk populations. · Oversees the delivery of services to high-risk populations on three campuses with special emphasis on the materials, workshops and activities developed in Responsibility #1. · Coordinates appropriate activities for incoming students with an emphasis on the UCC 101 population, first generation college students, student athletes, basic skills students, and those in high-risk classes, among others. · Remains cognizant of any changes in developmental curriculum and coordinates ALC’s response to such changes. · Recommends peer, paraprofessional, and professional tutors to the Director. · Develops training modules for peer, paraprofessional and professional tutors who work with at risk students. · Assists in the marketing of the services to faculty, students, and staff of each campus with emphasis on outreach to students in developmental courses and targeted cohorts. · Trains peer, paraprofessional, and professional tutors to better support our tutorial staff according to the CRLA list of recommended topics and other relevant topics. · Oversees appropriate record keeping and data to produce reports as needed. · Tutors in the areas of expertise. · Evaluates assigned personnel as appropriate. · Serves on College Governance committees, or other College committees, and attends appropriate departmental and divisional meetings as requested. · Maintains and updates the departmental website and Canvas shell. · Uses social media to advertise offering and services of the ALC . · Participates in commencement events. · Performs all duties assigned by supervisor. Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, with preference in English, Mathematics, or Computer Science fields Experience: · Minimum of two years teaching/tutoring experience in a higher education setting. Experience must be both in person and utilizing computer-aided instruction. · Experience working with high-risk student populations. · Knowledge of computer-aided instruction and basic computer applications. · Ability to work in fast paced and pressured situations. · Ability to work with changing technology. · Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with students, staff, and faculty. · Experience in supervision and evaluation of student workers. · Ability to speak to audiences with confidence. Competencies and Skills Required: · Minimum of two years teaching/tutoring experience in a higher education setting. Physical Demands and Work Environment: · This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled. · Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. · No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
