Educational Support Specialist
Union County College is a public comprehensive community college providing quality, affordable, accessible educational programs that serve the greater Union County region. It is the oldest of New Jerseys 19 Associate Degree Colleges, serving both career-minded and transfer-oriented students since 1933. The College enrolls almost 30,000 credit, non-credit and continuing education students and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Many programs lead to the Associate in Arts, Science and Applied Science degrees. Campus: Elizabeth General Description: The Educational Support Specialist, under the direction of the Director of the Learning Centers, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Academic Learning Centers (ALCs)/Multimedia Labs. The incumbent designs and supervises the Computer-Assisted Instruction ( CAI ) tutorial environment to assure effective delivery of CAI services, and works with the Director of the Learning Centers to develop and maintain services responsive to ALC student needs. The incumbent also assists and instructs faculty and staff in the proper use of computer hardware and software, including multi-media applications for traditional classrooms, student computer labs, and the Internet’s World Wide Web. Characteristics, Duties and Responsibilities: • Recommends peer, paraprofessional, and professional tutors to the Director. • Supervises and evaluates staff of peer, paraprofessional, and professional tutors. • Creates and maintains tutor schedules. • Manages ALC / CAI local area network. • Conducts ESL conversation practice groups. • Provides tutoring as needed in areas of expertise. • Designs, creates, updates, and maintains ALC’s training course for the college’s online course management system • Trains staff and faculty in the use and integration of CAI programs, Learning Management Systems, World Wide Web into their curricula, and conducts workshops and provides individualized instruction to students • Trains computer lab staff on the computer systems being utilized. • Researches and evaluates new software and World Wide Web sites in conjunction with faculty. • Presents CRLA Training modules, UCC101 workshops and Learning Management System workshops to tutorial staff and students. • Creates and maintains departmental databases and ensure data collection integrity. • Designs and implements instruction manuals for ALC software. • Troubleshoots hardware and software problems in the labs in conjunction with IT. • Conducts workshops and provides individualized instruction to staff and students and • Learns new technologies and stays abreast of this rapidly evolving field. • Serves on College Governance committees, or other College committees, and attends appropriate departmental and divisional meetings as requested. • Participates in commencement events. • Performs any other duties as assigned by the Director of Academic Learning Center. Education Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree required, with a preference in English or ESL , Computer Science, Mathematics or any other STEM discipline. Experience: Experience: • Minimum of one-year of teaching or tutoring experience. • Knowledge of computer-aided instructions, basic computer applications, Microsoft Office Suite, Learning Management System, and web applications. • Experience supporting PCs. • Experience in supervision and evaluation of student workers. Physical Demands and Work Environment: • This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled. • Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. • No or very limited exposure to physical risk. • Some travel required.
