Position Summary
Under the general supervision of a physician, the Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner the Electroencephalographic (EEG) Technician is a healthcare professional specializing in recording and analyzing electrical activity in the brain. They play a critical role in diagnosing neurological conditions such as epilepsy, sleep disorders, brain injuries, strokes, and other disorders affecting brain function. EEG technicians work closely with epileptologist, neurologists, physicians, and other medical professionals to ensure accurate data collection and patient care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
Performs quality recordings by collecting pertinent patient history information, properly preparing the patient using age specific criteria, conducting the examination, and preparing the recording for physician interpretation using proper techniques for placing and attaching the electrodes. Educate patients on procedures and record medical history from patients and charts. Performs accurate neurodiagnostic recordings in a hospital / office setting with the ability to transport machine carefully and safely. Ability to recognize and eliminate artifacts (e.g., muscle movements, eye blinks) from EEG recordings. Utilizes appropriate activation procedures. Review patient care issues. Is available for On Call as assigned. Accurately documents, posts, and charges for procedures to ensure quality standards set by the hospital. Accurately records and reviews patient and billing information. Actively supports and participates in department and hospital quality improvement initiatives as directed. Assists with creation and updates of written protocols. adheres to internal controls established for department. Expand knowledge of current and new neurodiagnostic techniques and related procedures by participating in conferences, in services and independent study. Adheres to the hospital infection control and safety standards. Performs routine maintenance on equipment, to ensure that EEG equipment is sanitary and properly always functioning. Ensures the equipment is in good working condition and initiates appropriate contact when repairs are required. Ensures that the EEG testing area is always maintained in a clean and sanitary condition. Displays a caring and courteous attitude and goes above and beyond department expectations. Maintains a professional relationship with all customers, employees, patients, administration, and medical staff. Maintains the confidentiality of employees, patients, administration, and medical staff information with no infractions. Excellent hand/eye coordination, good vision, good hearing and articulation. Able to push/pull equipment weighing over 40 pounds. Able to lift and transfer up to 40 pounds. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree or certificate program in EEG technology, neurodiagnostic, or a related field. Certification from ABRET (American Board of Registered Electroneurodiagnostics) Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification required. Knowledge of applicable computer operating systems and software. 1 + years experience is preferred.Core Competencies

May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) database and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS database can also be found on the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc Constantly utilizes/operates computer to access and document information. Must be able to stand for long periods of time in the procedural area. Ability to communicate with patients, families, and hospital employees on telephone and using email.
