Job Title: Safety Specialist - Process Safety Management and Hazardous Materials

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Safety Specialist to join our Axalta Mount Clemens team. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) standards and effective hazardous material management across our Mount Clemens site. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs to minimize risks associated with hazardous materials and chemical processes while fostering a culture of safety throughout the site.

Key Responsibilities:

Process Safety Management (PSM):

Develop, implement, and maintain PSM programs in compliance with OSHA’s 1910.119 standard and other applicable regulations.Participate in process hazard analyses (PHAs) and risk assessments to identify and mitigate risks associated with chemical processes.Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to review and improve process safety procedures and controls.Lead incident investigations related to process safety, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.

Hazardous Materials Management:

Oversee the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.Conduct regular audits and inspections of hazardous materials storage areas and processes to ensure compliance.Develop and deliver training programs for employees on hazardous materials handling and emergency response procedures.Coordinate with environmental specialist to ensure proper hazardous waste management and disposal.

Regulatory Compliance:

Stay up-to-date with relevant safety and environmental regulations and ensure organizational compliance.Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies as needed.Act as the primary point of contact during hazardous material safety regulatory audits.

Training and Culture Building:

Conduct safety training programs for employees, contractors, and other stakeholders.Promote a culture of safety by leading initiatives, campaigns, and events that emphasize the importance of process safety and hazardous material management.Provide guidance and mentorship to employees on safety best practices.

Continuous Improvement:

Identify opportunities to improve safety practices, processes, and technologies.Implement innovative solutions to enhance process safety and hazardous materials management.Identify waste elimination, reduction, and reuse strategies and implement changesMonitor safety performance metrics and develop action plans to address areas of concern.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in process safety management and hazardous materials handling.In-depth knowledge of OSHA PSM standards, EPA RMP regulations, and other relevant safety regulations.Strong analytical skills and experience conducting PSM audits, hazard assessments, and incident investigations.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.Proficiency in using safety management software and tools.Relevant certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or similar are preferred.
