Responsibilities You will maintain the oil and filters in engines and other power equipment in accordance with technical and manufacturer's manuals. You will follow emergency procedures to maintain safety and provide continuous electric service. You will inspect operation of engineering cooling systems and heat exchangers and document results in engineer and power plant logs. You will adjust transformer taps to keep within the specified operating range of voltage and current. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Your resume must show that you have the ability to perform common tasks such as: 1) Assisting in minor overhead high voltage distribution repairs and/or assists in response crews in the field; 2) Maintaining system controls and/or data logging within a power plant consisting of fiber optics, transducers, programmable logic controllers, relays and thermal couplers and 3) Performing inspections, major overhauls and repairs of diesel engines, generators, and/or other electrical equipment. Education Additional Information This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. This position is entitled to a remote site-offshore allowance up to $10.00 a day and may not to exceed $10.00 a day in addition to pay otherwise due to the employee. (See 5 U.S.C. 5942 and 5 C.F.R. 591 Subpart C). Applicants should be aware of the limited medical care in the island. There are no physicians. The Navy Hospital Corpsman are assigned to San Nicolas Island and are able to treat minor illness and injuries. They are also capable of providing initial stabilization of most medical emergencies. In the event of emergency, individuals will be evacuated by aircraft to the nearest hospital emergency room. Foul weather conditions may delay air evacuation for several hours or even several days. The incumbent should consider this information seriously, especially if you have potentially life threatening medical problems that may require the immediate attention to a physician. You must have a current California Class C license or higher. You will be required to operate bucket trucks, auger trucks, line trucks, and forklifts. You will work 0630-1630, however is subject to rotating shifts either 1400-2330, 0001-0930, or 0630-1630 on an alternate work schedule as required. All employees shall maintain a neat clean appearance at all possible times. You may be subject to rotational work assignments for extended periods to perform duties at various locations. All employees will be included on the after-hours emergency recall list. In the event of a major emergency or disaster, all employees will be required to report to their supervisor in a most timely manner. Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather and temperature conditions during the day and at night. Duties may require arduous physical exertion. Certain incentives (such as Recruitment, Relocation or Student Loan Repayment) may be authorized to eligible selectees. A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized. A 40 hour work week is typical of this position. You will be required to work at a job site or location other than a permanently assigned location. You will be required to perform shift work. You will be required to work overtime and/or be "called back". You will be required to work other than normal duty hours, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments.
