DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking an experienced and motivated Electrical Engineer with Airfield experience to join our Aviation team. The successful candidate will be able to develop construction plans, technical specifications, cost estimates, and design reports for a variety of airfield electrical projects that include aprons, runway and taxiway lighting systems, electrical vaults, supporting utility infrastructure, and siting and design of NAVAIDS. 

Candidate must be capable of engineering duties such as electrical system design, product selection, and overseeing the installation of electrical systems and products. Provides support and mentoring to junior engineers and associates to further their technical and professional development.

Design requirements will include a variety of airfield electrical/civil projects. The selected candidate will work with the current Airfield Electrical and Civil Aviation staff and will work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach with project design teams.

The successful candidate is a responsible and accountable professional and will have creative solution-finding, organizational, and time management skills, a passion for solving complex design problems, a track record of producing projects on time and on budget, high standards for quality and performance, and a thorough understanding of design and construction processes related to airfield electrical design and engineering. Federal experience, particularly with the Department of Defense (DoD), is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepares studies, construction documents, calculations reports and other documentation to support airfield electrical design. Prepares quantities, construction cost estimates and project technical specifications. Prepares drawings for airfield electrical projects including, but not limited to, terminal aprons, runways, taxiways, electrical vaults, supporting utility infrastructure, and siting and design of NAVAIDS.  Prepare written narratives for design reports as part of project deliverables. Perform design calculations including, but not limited to, load calculations, lighting spacing, capacity analysis, and other power and lighting calculations. Familiarity with FAA and/or UFC standards and advisory circulars and the National Electrical Code. Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D software to perform engineering tasks and produce construction drawings. Prepare clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions. Coordinate tasks and project schedules. Communicate with clients regarding project issues, schedules and budgets. Lead meetings and coordinate action items and project deliverables for subsequent submittals. Perform activities and produce documentation associated with design, construction, and contract documents, including research, code analysis, calculations, life cycle cost analysis, modeling, studies, field documentation, reports, drawings, specifications, and design analysis. Research FAA standards and circulars, code, design, and detailed project specific requirements to ensure designs conform to sound engineering design and client specifications. Check drawings (plans, details, etc.) to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards. Review project requirements and specifications and confer with other disciplines and managers to determine assistance required in plan preparation, evaluation of project conditions, design changes, and reports. Perform quality control procedures for work performed by others such as reviewing project deliverables prior to client submissions. Direct and coordinate activities involved in design. Perform design work under minimum supervision. Review shop drawings and submittals, respond to RFI’s, and perform site visits as needed during the construction phase. Evaluate field installations, review compliance, and recommend modifications as needed. Assist in the preparation of scope of work and fee proposals. Calculate design costs. Be responsible for airfield electrical discipline project design budgets. Be front-facing to clients. Perform client and project needs assessments, determine and discuss potential solutions, and ensure satisfactory customer service. Also, attend project meetings to present design concepts and make adjustments to meet client requirements. Prepare and present technical and program information to team members, management, and clients in a clear and logical manner. Responsible for preparation of exhibits for presentations to clients. Coordinate or perform field work to gather data and materials. Maintain a working knowledge of government and industry design criteria and standards. Create a good line of communication with both internal and external customers. Maintain proficiency in computer software related to the practice of airfield electrical engineering. Responsible for maintaining technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives, attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, attending in-house systems/management training. Responsible for maintaining professional licensure. Travel occasionally as required, for project meetings, monitoring project progress, and on-site work. Other duties as assigned. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide oversight and direction to electrical engineering team members. May include 1+ reports.

EXPERIENCE

7+ years of related experience. A Master’s degree may be substituted for 1-2 years of experience.

EDUCATION

Four-year degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.

Experience in airfield electrical design for a variety of airfield projects. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively on all levels both visually and verbally with team members, customers, subcontractors, and vendors. Ability to conceptualize and think creatively. Ability to be self-motivated and to research and troubleshoot problems as they arise. Ability to manage working on multiple projects and meet deliverable deadlines. Complete work in an efficient and accurate manner. Establish clear lines of communication within project team and with client for free flow of information. Demonstrated ability to properly address and manage change. Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills. Possess a proficient understanding of relationships among design and engineering disciplines, clients, and contractors. Engineering software experience (AutoCAD Civil 3D). Revit experience is a plus. Knowledge of Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and Sharepoint. Knowledge of FAA ACs, government, client, and industry local codes, regulations, and standards governing design and construction projects. Knowledge of UFCs is a plus. Knowledge of Visual 3D, AGI32, and SKM software.

LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS

Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Must be licensed in Maryland or have the ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity.

COMPENSATION 

The approximate compensation range for this position is $100,942 to $174,865.  This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.  Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
