Pay Range: 

$132,810 - $204,636 Annually

$132,810 - $170,556 Annually for the SES.2 level

$159,330 - $204,636 Annually for the SES.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Electrical Engineer who provides control system and power conditioning solutions in support of the Jupiter Laser Facility (JLF). The Jupiter Laser Facility is an intermediate-scale, open laser facility dedicated to high-energy density science, with three operating laser systems and target areas.  The facility is designed to provide a high degree of experimental flexibility and high laser shot rates, and to allow direct user operation of experiments.

This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate. Electrical Engineers in LSEO are responsible for hardware selection, software development, and system integration. Electrical hardware includes high voltage power supplies, relays, capacitors, and pulse forming networks. Control systems include power conditioning, diagnostics, safety interlocks, vacuum controls, and cooling systems. Platforms include Rockwell ControlLogix Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), National Instruments (NI) industrial controllers, Linux and Windows microprocessor based servers, and in-house developed controls environments.

The position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications.

Job responsibilities:

Works under limited direction and collaborates with teams to solve moderately complex problems that require analysis and creative use of established techniques and methods.Provide electrical and controls engineering solutions for design, assembly, calibration, troubleshooting and testing of electrical and control systems.Prepare supporting safety and engineering documentation and participate in engineering design reviews.Interface with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to complete various LLNL projects.Participate in engineering testing operations, analyze results, and write reports.Respond to failures of laser electrical and electronic equipment and develop and oversee troubleshooting plans to return the system to operation with minimal oversight.Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the SES.3 level:

As a primary technical contact on a multi-disciplinary team, contribute ideas, design, laboratory testing, and analysis in support of complex programmatic goals and objectives. Mentor junior staff. May lead team efforts for developing complex electrical and controls systems, including management of scope, schedule, and shared resources.  Present at formal and informal design reviews. Represent the organization with independent analysis of complex controls and pulsed power system performance. Present and disseminate research results at internal meetings, scientific conferences, peer-reviewed publications, open and classified environments, and organizations internal and external to LLNL. Qualifications Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (BSEE) or closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.Comprehensive knowledge of electrical engineering concepts related to design, assembly, calibration, and testing of analog and digital electrical systems.Comprehensive knowledge of one or more of the following: process control systems, microcontroller hardware and software, programmable logic controller (PLC) coding, LabVIEW programming, analog design, electro-optics systems, capacitive discharge units (CDUs), inductive power supplies, and the National Electric Code (NEC).Broad experience with sensor integration, calibration, and signal analysis techniques.Ability to work  under limited direction and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including contributing to status updates and design reviews. Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to document analyses, deliver scientific presentations, contribute to technical and scientific reports and papers, and explain technical information.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level:

Advanced knowledge of and significant experience in the design of complex control systems hardware architecture.Advanced experience in conducting experiments of electrical configuration and settings, the advanced application of timing and data acquisition systems, and the conceptual designs of electrical systems.Significant experience mentoring others, leading small teams, coordinating efforts with other groups,  and ensuring compatibility with interdependent systems.Advanced project management skills necessary to manage controls scope of a complex project and achieve system requirements within allotted schedule, while planning for future enhancements and creating strong process documentation.Significant experience defining scope from often not well defined and/or rapidly changing requirements.

Additional desired qualifications

Master’s degree in electrical engineering (MSEE) or related field.Experience in High Voltage Pulse Power Systems and Controls.Experience with Laser Systems and their associated hardware and controls.Experience with system level design, architecture, and design processes for engineering rigor. Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
