Job Overview

This is an onsite position located in Longview, TX.

Working within Komatsu’s Electrification Center of Excellence, the Electrical Engineer-Motor Design is responsible for electromagnetic designs for both air-cooled and water-cooled Switched Reluctance motors and generators, applied to equipment for the mining and construction industries, from smaller Komatsu construction loaders to very large electric drive dump trucks (EDT)).

The Electrical Engineer also provides technical support for the drawings associated with coils, connections, cabling, etc. along with technical support for the electrical interfaces to the target equipment.

Key Job Responsibilities Generates creative solutions using design principles and experience. Translates concepts and information into images and drawings. Uses feedback to modify designs for manufacturability and cost-effective products. Defines tests and analyzes test data to ensure design meets expected performance requirements. Interfaces with various functions within the organization or customers to review product testing results and to discuss potential design changes to address performance shortcomings. Understanding business implications of decisions, displays orientation to profitability and drives cost effective designs and decisions. Communicates on complex topics to audiences ranging from customers to peers to shop personnel Makes timely decisions, exhibiting sound and accurate judgment. Supports and explains reasoning for decisions, includes appropriate people in decision-making process. Sets goals and objectives. Organizes and schedules tasks and develops realistic action plans. Qualifications/Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required; Master’s with Motor Design emphasis preferred. At least 5 years of design experience in a manufacturing setting for large (200+ HP) traction motors and generators. Experience designing Switched Reluctance motors and generators preferred PE license preferred (any state). CAD experience, preferably Solid Edge or SOLIDWORKS. Demonstrated electromagnetic design experience related to the production of motors and generators for mining, locomotive or paper mill industries; ability to use associated design software. Knowledge of standard motor/generator manufacturing processes and related materials. Demonstrated ability to work with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure designs are cost effective to manufacture. Knowledge of performance testing procedures and direct hands-on experience running tests and collecting and analyzing associated data required to validate designs. Working knowledge of IEEE, IEC, ASME and NEMA and other industry standards as they relate to motor/generator electromagnetic design, quality assurance testing and prototype validation testing. Effective, complete and accurate written and verbal communication.  Ability to present complex topics to customers, peers and senior leaders. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Travel requirements: Occasional domestic/international travel 6-8 times per year for 1 week per trip on average Ability to speak Japanese is a plus.
