Your Opportunity

Our Substation group seeks experienced Substation Engineers to work in a Stantec office anywhere in Canada.

In this position of an Electrical Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work as part of a team of engineers and technologists on multiple projects for a range of public and private sector clients. This role is suitable for a motivated, energetic individual who wants to challenge their abilities in a dynamic work environment. Work performed will be under the general supervision of a Senior Electrical Engineer.

The successful candidate will perform a variety of tasks which may include assisting with the plans and designs of transmission and distribution substations and HVAC substations, HVDC converter stations as well as assisting with the preparation of preliminary design and technical specifications for HVDC converter stations and power cable installations. The candidate should have an understanding of all aspects of substation design including, but not limited to, site selection, physical layout, grounding, lightning protection, and equipment selection and sizing.

Your Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing electrical engineering services on small to large scale domestic and international projects. Below are some of the responsibilities but not limited to:

Responsible for developing all aspects of HV substation physical engineering design Prepare reports that present technical and project information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements Preparation of Electrical Physical design packages consisting of One-line, Site Plan, Electrical Plan & Sections, Grounding Plan & Details, Conduit Plan & Details, Control House Plan, Control House Grounding Plan & Details, Lighting Plan, Lightning Protection Plan and Bill of material (BOM) Coordinate with designers and engineers of other disciplines to complete deliverables Interpret and incorporate vendor information into design deliverables Perform QA/QC of electrical engineering design packages Provide regular progress updates related to deliverables on project Responsible for proposal development and LOE (Level of Effort) analysis Working knowledge of substation equipment engineering Development of project estimates Conduct site observation and/or inspection activities during design or construction phases of the project Perform thorough quality control of construction documents and provide innovative solutions Your Capabilities and Credentials Ability to work effectively in a team environment and develop strong client relationships Strong organization skills and ability to manage multiple tasks Able to demonstrate solid technical understanding in writing and verbally Ability to visualize and evaluate equipment details, phase-to-ground, phase-to-phase clearances, and drawing relationships Solid understanding of substation grounding, lightning protection, and illumination studies (strongly preferred) Professional level knowledge of industry specifications for high voltage electrical equipment Ability to manage and deliver Physical Engineering deliverables as per project schedule and within budget Ability to work closely with Drafters, Engineers and Leads to adhere to project timelines for engineering deliverables Ability to understand client specific requirements (standards & specifications) and applicable codes & regulations for preparing physical electrical packages Ability to understand and interpret vendor information Ability to recognize when technical problems are developing and initiate appropriate corrective actions Collaborative knowledge of other substation disciplines: Civil, Structural, P&C, Studies Willing and able to travel occasionally when required.

Additional capabilities beneficial for the role

Collaborative knowledge of other substation disciplines: Civil, Structural, P&C, Studies Understanding of Power Systems analysis and related software packages (e.g. ETAP, SKM etc.) Knowledge of American and Canadian utility standards and design practices.

Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 7 to 10 years of relevant experience. Licensed Professional Engineer. Excellent report writing skills Proficient with MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat Experience with site visits to capture all technical data needed for estimates and execution of related substation expansions Experience in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD Experience in Grounding Analysis software such as WinIGS and CDEGS is an asset Ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work and collaborate with a range of internal and external customers.

Office Location and Schedule

Typical office environment, working with computers and drawings for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to hazards including construction, weather, and industrial operations that may be experienced at the infrastructure facilities.

Hybrid work model to work from home is possible.
