Electrical Reliability Engineer

Job Summary:

The Marathon Kenai Refinery has a full-time, exempt opening for an Electrical Reliability Engineer.  The position provides electrical engineering support to ensure reliable operation of the refinery units.  This includes budgeting for planned equipment replacements and upgrades, troubleshooting existing issues, implementing new solutions, and creating reliability programs targeting longer run-times and safer operations. The position requires a large amount of collaborating and interfacing with all departments of the refinery as well as various corporate entities. The schedule is Monday- Thursday - 10 hours and support TAR once every three years.

Key Responsibilities:

Act as the electrical SME for the refinery; troubleshoot operational equipment problems related to electrical equipment and components.

Work with routine maintenance planners to retrofit existing obsolete equipment with modern, “like in-kind” designs.

Work collaboratively with multiple disciplines to analyze electrical equipment failure trends, conduct detailed root cause analysis; recommend and implement appropriate corrective actions to maximize equipment availability and reliability.

Develop and maintain site “Bad Actor” list for refinery to identify assets which impact production/reliability.  Identify and implement appropriate corrective actions.

Define and implement electrical equipment improvement strategies to address known reliability issues.  Ensure alignment and conformance with long-term operational objectives, corporate specifications, and industry standards and best practices.

Manage and maintain 5-year budget cycles for electrical equipment and infrastructure reliability improvements, projects, and maintenance strategies. 

Support development of site procedures for inspection and testing of Mechanical Integrity (MI) covered equipment.

Provide technical assistance to the maintenance department and area teams in resolving electrical equipment design, operation, and maintenance problems.  Reach out to internal and external experts for assistance as required.

Develop recommendations for equipment and infrastructure upgrades including financial justification (life cycle cost analysis) and assist in project development.

Provide technical expertise and support to the engineering department.  Provides support through all phases of capital and expense projects.  Participate in technical reviews to ensure detailed engineering meets design specifications, codes, and engineering standards.  Serve as project engineer responsible for scope, schedule, and cost on small to medium sized projects.

Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for large capital projects as needed.

Periodically review electrical equipment corporate specifications for potential improvements based on industry and site-specific experience.

Help review and manage spare parts inventory ensuring all necessary parts are stocked for both existing and new equipment.

Maintain equipment testing data management systems and ensure all required information is captured and documented appropriately.

Maintain site electrical system model and provide necessary updates to ensure that it remains current. 

Develop and review turnaround work lists and detailed work scopes for electrical equipment and components.

Provide leadership, guidance, and technical support during turnarounds and unplanned outages.

Provide technical direction and support to Procurement group.

Champion Management of Change (MOC) for maintenance and project driven changes.

Ensure equipment repairs meet or exceed OEM specifications.

Display a commitment to continuous improvement and training through innovation and mentoring of junior engineers, shop personnel, and interns.

Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum Qualification

Must have a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering or similar Engineering discipline required. (Education must be achieved by start date.)

Must have a minimum 3 years post degree electrical engineering experience in an industrial setting.

Must have effective communication skills critical as this position will be required to mentor others and achieve alignment across departments on critical efforts and strategies. Strong Interpersonal leadership and collaboration skills essential.

Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.

Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)

Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.

Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in refining or petrochemical industries with maintenance/reliability experience and project management experience is preferred.
