Electrical Specialist

The New Castle Generating Station, situated on a 270-acre site along the Beaver River, has undergone a significant transformation from a coal plant to a natural gas facility in 2016, breathing new life into its operations and contributing to the region's energy landscape. Equipped with three natural gas-fired steam boilers, the plant boasts a total potential MW output of 328. The plant is notable for its utilization of B&W Boilers and Westinghouse Steam Turbine Generators, controlled by an ABB DCS system.

Opportunity Summary

The Electrical Specialist is a key contributor to the seamless operation and maintenance of diverse electrical systems. Responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance of motors, generators, and high voltage equipment, the technician ensures the plant's reliability and safety. With a commitment to preventive measures, emergency response, and effective communication, the Electrical Technician plays a crucial role in optimizing plant performance and fostering a culture of safety and efficiency.

Additionally, the Electrical Specialist will provide occasional support as needed to the Niles Peaker CT facility located in Niles, OH. 

Primary Functions

Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal, and communication systems. Perform journey-level electrician tasks, including the installation and repair of electrical wiring, equipment, and controls. Maintain and test DC emergency battery backup systems. Conduct maintenance of 480V–13.8KV electrical systems, including high-voltage switchyards, ensuring compliance with electrical safety practices. Set up complex rigging, tackle, blocking, and scaffolding for equipment handling and maintenance tasks. Install, adjust, align, and fit bearings, shafting, gears, and similar equipment requiring close tolerances. Perform static and dynamic balancing of equipment. Analyze vibration data, oil analysis, and other diagnostic tool data, making recommendations for corrective actions. Perform intermediate-level machinist work within required tolerances, including operating, adjusting, and maintaining machine shop equipment. Perform oxyacetylene cutting, brazing, soldering, gas and electrical welding (exclusive of welds requiring approval or certification), and rough metallizing equipment repairs. Form, shape, and temper tools, fixtures, and jigs. Create necessary sketches and drawings as required. Perform electrical system isolations per industry standards, ensuring safety and training others in electrical safety programs. Work in compliance with all safety procedures and environmental permits to avoid accidents. Conduct routine inspections to proactively identify and address potential electrical issues, minimizing unplanned downtime. Provide training for assigned employees on equipment operations, maintenance practices, and safety protocols. Work on an individual level to identify the root causes of equipment failures and forced outages, recommending and implementing corrective actions based on standard practices and procedures. Collaborate with technicians, operators, and maintenance teams to integrate electrical systems with plant operations. Document all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections to maintain accurate and up-to-date records. Complete and submit shift and job reports as required. Participate in planned outages by providing technical support for electrical system maintenance, repairs, and inspections. Maintain housekeeping in assigned areas during and upon completion of work, including cleaning, painting, and maintaining tools and equipment. Respond to emergencies promptly, regardless of the time. Learn the responsibilities of the Pump Room Operator and provide occasional support to the Pump Room as needed. Provide occasional support to the Niles Peaker CT facility in Niles, OH, as needed. Perform work of other classifications as necessary.

Working Relationships

The Electrical Specialist reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and may also take direction from the Plant Manager.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing on feet for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.).  Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position follows a Monday to Friday work schedule during regular day shift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Starting compensation will be $40.49 per hour.

Job Qualifications

A high school or trade school diploma or the equivalent plus four years of journeyman electrician experience desired. Previous experience as an Journeyman Electrician, or relevant military background, preferably within a power plant or heavy industrial setting, showcasing a robust understanding of electrical systems. Proficiency in inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and installing a wide array of electrical equipment, including motors, generators, transformers, switches, and control systems. Hands-on experience working with voltages ranging from 480V to 13.8KV and familiarity with high voltage switchyard basic electrical systems maintenance, adhering to safety practices. Proven track record of executing electrical system isolations in accordance with industry standards, coupled with the ability to impart training on Electrical Safety programs. Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment and have excellent organizational skills. Strong personal computer skills to facilitate various tasks, including documentation, communication, and data analysis. Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
