Job Description The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire an Electrician with the Drinking Water Operations Directorate. Under direction, of the Supervisor of Electricians, the Electrician will serve as Croton Electrician and will supervise the Croton Electrician Helper. They will install, repair, replace and maintain electric wiring systems and components, equipment and apparatus for lighting, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), power, communication and other systems, in or on buildings, structures and roads in accordance with applicable codes. Specific duties include: - Pulling wires and testing electrical systems - Replacing defective light switches, plugs and lighting fixtures - Performing routine maintenance operation - Installing raceways and electrical conductors - Conducting tests on existing installations to determine faults and making necessary repairs. - Assisting in the requisition of supplies and equipment and conduct emergency and scheduled water supply system and building and facility operations and repairs. - Supervising assigned personnel, completing tasks and standard evaluations, and enforcing agency regulations and safety procedures. - Complying with all environmental health and safety laws, rules, and regulations. - Operating motor vehicles or other equipment in the performance of assigned duties. - Utilizing a Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for assignment of work and track statistics through work completion. - Researching code compliant materials and equipment necessary to complete projects and facilitating the procurement process. - Investigating and documenting electrical issues within the region and assisting with resolution. Some of the physical activities performed by Electricians, and environmental conditions experienced are: reading meters and instruments in dimly lit areas, climbing and descending ladders, working in areas of hot temperatures and poor ventilation, using both hands to work overhead, using hand held tools to prepare wires and conduit for installation, carrying tools and equipment up and down stairs, and distinguishing colors. Special Working Conditions: Electricians may be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Medical Requirement: Candidates will be required to wear a respirator while performing the essential functions of this job within certain designated areas requiring respiratory protection. Employees must be physically able to wear a respirator. OSHA regulations have established medical guidelines for wearing a respirator; therefore, candidates will be required to have pre appointment and periodic post-appointment medical examinations to demonstrate that they meet applicable OSHA standards and to monitor their medical status. Once hired, employees must continue to satisfy OSHA regulations for the duration of their employment. License Requirements: A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. Obtain and maintain a NYC Special Electrician’s License for the duration of employment in this position. Qualifications 1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician; or 2. At least three years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician and sufficient full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician's helper or apprentice electrician or education in the electrical or electronic field acquired in an approved trade, technical school or vocational high school or college or university to make up the equivalent of the remaining experience. Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 credits, from an accredited college or university, for one year of experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of such helper or apprentice experience, or education in an approved trade or technical school or vocational high school in the electrical or electronic field. Less than a full year of helper or apprentice experience, or relevant education, will receive prorated credit. 3. License Requirements For appointment to certain positions, candidates will be required to possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. For assignment as a special electrician, candidates must possess and maintain the license(s) and/or certificate(s) required to perform these duties.
