Title:
Electro- optical EngineerOverview:
The Directed Energy Weapons Department at KORD is seeking an electro-optical engineer with experience working on directed energy (DE) laser weapon or similar systems. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with strong written and verbal communication and proficiency in analytical skills. The individual is also a motivated self-starter, and participant in professional and community activities. The ideal candidate will be technically sound and committed to innovative, cost-effective solutions for DE laser system development. The candidate will work with other engineers to support the design, development, integration, and verification of laser systems. Duties will include: developing laser system requirements; modeling, preparation, assembly, troubleshooting, installation and checkout; and test data reduction and analysis. The candidate will be an organized, objective, balanced decision maker, who supports technical reviews; creates optical testing layouts; and diagnoses technical issues and implements effective solutions.
Minimum of 10 years of experience with at least 3 years of experience with laser systems.
Experience in the development, integration, test and production of EO, IR and laser systems.
Industry knowledge of existing laser systems and research areas
Develop specifications, tolerances, and tests for fiber laser systems and have an appreciation of safety aspects and requirements of High Energy Laser systems
Ability to travel and work at government test facilities for periodic time frames
Design, assembly, integration and test of laser weapon system beam directors
Understanding of geometric optics
Working knowledge of contamination, cleaning processes, and impacts in laser systems
Metrology and common test equipment for laser alignment
Ability to independently set up and perform optical and laser system tests
An active, or ability to obtain, U.S. Security Clearance.
Desired Skills:
Ability to research and develop advanced laser concepts
Proficiency modeling, analyzing, and simulating laser system function and performance
Experience using ZEMAX, MATLAB, MODTRAN, HELCoMES, SolidWorks, NV-IPM, LabVIEW, CREO, and HELEEOS.
Perform end-to-end kill chain analysis
Combining lasers using spectral, spatial or coherent techniques
Experience with the verification of laser induced damage thresholds (LIDT) of high energy laser optics
Experience with control systems for beam direction and auto alignment
Industry knowledge of laser optic coatings and performance, including LIDT
Hands on experience with design, integration & test of laser weapon systems (greater than 5kW output)
Parametric modeling of spectral laser beam combination with diffraction gratings
Laser safety in accordance with ANSI Z136.1 or similar
Skilled with interferometers, wavefront sensors, and near-field, far-field and thermal imaging techniques
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with emphasis on optics, optical engineering, or lasers.
