Electronic Technician Trainee
Summary Throughout this Not-To-Exceed (NTE) assignment, trainees will build upon the experience they already have and be provided assignments to help prepare them to qualify for a permanent FBI Electronics Technician position. Successful trainees will obtain the experience needed to qualify for and be offered a permanent FBI Electronics Technician position. Unsuccessful trainees will be removed from FBI employment. Responsibilities As an Electronics Technician Trainee you will: Perform simple, preventive and corrective maintenance on various items of equipment of the Bureau's communications and intrusion systems; test and replace defective components and perform preventive maintenance at predetermined intervals as recommended by manufacturers. Assist higher grade technician(s) during installation, maintenance and removal of equipment and associated systems by performing basic test and maintenance checks developing skills necessary for performing advanced maintenance tasks. Review pertinent technical manuals, remain current with technology, and be available to attend government sponsored training classes if offered to the trainee. Make appropriate notation in equipment maintenance log regarding maintenance performed. Take periodic inventory of radio parts and check results against a spare parts quota which is prepared by the senior technician in office. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to obtain a Top Secret (TS) clearance. Must be able to obtain an SCI clearance. Must be able to pass a Federal government physical examination. Some travel may be required. Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid driver's license. Selectee will be required to complete form FD-887. Request for Access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI). Physical Demands: Work requires strenuous physical exertion such as climbing tall ladders or towers, long periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; and recurring lifting heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds such as radio and related communications systems. Work Environment: Work involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations such as electrical shocks, falls from high towers, inclement weather conditions (rain, snow, ice, and high winds), requiring a range of safety and other precautions, including accompaniment by another technician when performing duties considered hazardous to life and limb. Applicants must meet the qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Applicants can qualify for the GS 07 level based on Specialized Experience (SE) or Education. There are four (4) methods by which candidates may meet the qualification requirements for the Electronics Technician Trainee GS 07 position: Method 1 - Education in Basic Electronics: To qualify based on education, you must have completed six (6) credit hours in basic electronics. Hours can be obtained in one or more of the following courses: Electronics Fundamentals Introduction to Electronics Concepts of Direct Current Concepts of Alternating Current AC/DC Fundamentals Electronic Circuits Digital Electronics (Fundamentals) Solid State Devices Concepts of Solid State Electronics Circuit Analysis Applied Electronics Microprocessors/Microcontrollers Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) Automatic Control Systems Integrated Circuits Controls and Automation Analog Integrated Electronics Power Semiconductor Electronics Introduction to Embedded Systems All degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. Method 2 - Radio Experience: To qualify based on radio experience, you must have either one (1) OR two (2) years of SE as listed below: 1. One (1) Year of SE: SE must be with Motorola Radio in RF, Infrastructure Maintenance, Subscriber Devices, and/or Tactical Communications; or 2. Two (2) Years of SE: SE can be with any radio brand in RF, Infrastructure Maintenance, Subscriber Devices, and/or Tactical Communications. Method 3 - Data Network Experience: To qualify based on data network experience, you must have either one (1) OR two (2) years of SE as listed below: 1. One (1) Year of SE: SE must be with Cisco switch and router programming in network infrastructure, network maintenance, and/or telecommunications; or 2. Two (2) Years of SE: SE can be with any switch and router programming brand in network infrastructure, network maintenance, and/or telecommunications. Method 4 - Physical Security Systems Experience: To qualify based on physical security systems experience, you must have two (2) years of SE as described below: Two (2) Years of SE: SE must be in alarm installation, access control installation, security programming, and/or video security system installation. If qualifying based on SE, please ensure all work applicable to meeting these requirements can be found in your resume. Education To qualify based on education, you must have completed six (6) credit hours in basic electronics. Hours can be obtained in one or more of the following courses: Electronics Fundamentals Introduction to Electronics Concepts of Direct Current Concepts of Alternating Current AC/DC Fundamentals Electronic Circuits Digital Electronics (Fundamentals) Solid State Devices Concepts of Solid State Electronics Circuit Analysis Applied Electronics Microprocessors/Microcontrollers Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) Automatic Control Systems Integrated Circuits Controls and Automation Analog Integrated Electronics Power Semiconductor Electronics Introduction to Embedded Systems All degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Additional Information In order to recruit and retain highly qualified candidates, selectees may be eligible for a recruitment incentive. Prior to receiving a recruitment incentive, selectees must sign a written agreement to complete a specific period of employment with the FBI at their assigned duty station. This position will be filled by detail or through temporary promotion. If this position is filled through temporary promotion, the selection may be made permanent without further competition. This position may be terminated at any time at the discretion of management. Please note: The Memphis Field Office and the Knoxville Field Office are in the process of consolidating to create one Field Office in Nashville, TN. Memphis and Knoxville will become Resident Agencies of Nashville. During this consolidation, some positions may be permanently relocated. Please consider this when applying to this position. If no documentation is furnished no credit will be given for time worked in that position. The following notations must be specified in the documentation (Memorandum for Record): Percent of time worked in the particular position (cannot conflict with main duties). The month/year work began. Frequency worked (i.e., daily, monthly, etc.) Specific duties performed.
