Additional Information: Learn more about benefits at M Health Fairview: www.fairview.org/benefits Responsibilities Job Description Job Summary: The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) is responsible for assisting the professional nurse in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and re-ordering and stocking supplies. The EDT may or may not be given a patient care assignment based on unit needs and the discretion of the professional nurse Job Expectations: Provides patient care by assisting the professional nurse in patient care activities: Provides emergency care to patients in the emergency room by monitoring the patient’s vital signs Assists with patient care as directed by RN may include but not limited to point of care testing, IV-line setup, discontinuation of IV, enema, suture removal, restraint application, catherization, 12 lead EKG Transports patients by wheelchair and cart Assists, measures, and fits patients with casts, crutches, immobilizers, and splints Assists patients with ambulation and positioning Transports medical samples from patients under direction of RN, such as blood, urine, or others Assists doctors and nurses during medical procedures and/or collecting specimens (i.e. eye lavage, ear irrigation, dressing changes, pelvic exam specimen) by following proper technique Informs RN of patient/family observations and concerns Promptly responds to patient call lights/requests Demonstrates concern for patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality Performs tasks with adaptations or modifications consistent with patients ages and developmental abilities Demonstrates adherence to proper procedures Assists in resuscitation with appropriate CPR and bag/valve mask Provides for patient safety (i.e. patient safety sitter) and informs RN of patient observations Documents patient care activities and procedures on the nursing records ensuring documentation is clear, concise, accurate, and timely Works with charge nurse to coordinate the scheduling of tests, lab work, diagnostic tests, clinical appointments, other department procedures schedules and consultations Maintains room/unit and supplies: Restocks room, supplies, carts and oxygen tanks Assists with patient room clean-up between patients Completes room and cart checklist Performs quality control checks on designated pieces of equipment: Completes quality control checklist Reports discrepancies and malfunctions to RN Transports medication from delivery to Emergency room department to a Registered Nurse or unit Medication Room when requested Maintains cleanliness and order within the nursing station office areas Qualifications Required Qualifications: License/Certification/Registration: Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers): Certification required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment. OnTrack participants must obtain BLS certification upon completion of the OnTrack program. AND ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING: Current EMT or ERT certification: Required upon hire (does not need to be maintained throughout employment). Current Paramedic Certification: Required upon hire (does not need to be maintained throughout employment). Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry: Required upon hire (does not need to be maintained throughout employment). Note: Individuals who have completed a Nursing Assistant program and are scheduled to take the NA Registry exam will have 90 days post-hire to become active on the registry. Current enrollment in an LPN, RN, or Nurse Practitioner program: Completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotation within the program. Six months of recent direct patient care experience: In an acute care, long-term care, or home care setting (roles may include Nursing Assistant, PCA, or Resident Assistant). Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program. LPN licensure upon hire: This licensure does not need to be maintained throughout employment. Preferred Qualifications: Experience: Previous Emergency Room experience: 1 or more years as an Emergency Room Scribe, paramedic, ERT, EMT, EDT, or ED EMS. Current CNA or NST experience: 1 or more years. License/Certification/Registration: Paramedic, EMT, ERT, LPN, CNA, PCA. Ideal Characteristics: High standard of creative prioritization skills and priority setting. Strong focus on customer service/patient service with every interaction. Excellent public relations and interpersonal/communication skills. Ability to work as an effective team member to deliver outstanding care. Competence in using appropriate computer applications. Ability to work independently and demonstrate critical thinking skills. Adaptability to change and ability to empower others in ongoing processes.
