Emergency Trauma Technician

Position Purpose

This position functions as a technician, supply aide, and unit clerk to support in the day-to-day operations of the Emergency Department (ED). The ETT works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.

When functioning as a technician, the ETT will be asked to perform various technical procedures in the ED.

When functioning as a supply aide, the ETT is responsible to stock the ED with the required supplies, equipment, and instrumentation to ensure safe, effective patient care.

When functioning as a unit clerk, the ETT is responsible to perform clerical duties, act as unit receptionist, coordinate unit/patient schedules and activities, efficiently use the computer and telephone, and maintain an orderly and efficient nurses station. The ETT will interface with all guests, visitors, families and patients arriving into, or calling the ED. The incumbent provides directions and information as well as making appropriate referrals.

Nature and Scope

As a member of the ED team, this position provides technical skills and communicates effectively with supervisors, other ED staff, physicians, and ancillary staff.

The demands on this position are very dynamic due to rapid changes in medical procedures, technical knowledge, instrumentation, equipment, and policies and procedures.

This position ensures that equipment is working properly before ED procedures, cares for equipment after procedure, and is responsible for reporting equipment that is not working properly or is broken.

Other related duties and flexible hours may be requested. This position has the freedom to rotate work areas and duties as needed and/or directed.

The EDT must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric and trauma patient population served and meet standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age specific competency standards.

Requires completion of a medical terminology course, or a passing grade on a medical terminology test.

Requires completion certificate of the Renown EKG interpretation class. Applicants with EKG experience may substitute a passing Renown EKG interpretation class final exam grade for the interpretation class. (Except 200323)

Requires the ability to perform a 12 lead EKG.

Must have successfully passed the unit clerk skills checklist, the tech. skills checklist and the orderly skills checklist during orientation and annually maintain competency as verified through completion of Competency Day in the Emergency Department.

Requires successful completion of trauma pathway.

Must successfully complete trauma technician skills checklist, which includes but is not limited to: trauma documentation, maintaining cervical spinal immobilization, assisting in various trauma related procedures, appropriate chain of custody for gunshot or stab wound patients, and designation of appropriate trauma staff.

Demonstrates knowledge of Stroke protocol and S.T. elevation myocardial infarction protocol (STEMI), including assisting with getting patients prepared for cardiac catheterization.

This position does provide patient care. The Emergency Trauma Technician performs phlebotomy and peripheral venous access. (Except 200323)

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.

Experience:

Six months Emergency Medical Technician (EMT I) experience required, or six months C.N.A. experience required, or six months Emergency Department Technician, or 6 months Medical Assistant experience required.

License(s):

None

Certification(s):

Current BLS certification by American Heart Association standards required.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
