GENERAL SUMMARY:

Transports patients, cleans and disinfects endoscopes and related equipment, performs clerical functions and assists nursing staff in delivery of care to adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations. This position includes same work assignments at Alternate Mercy endoscopy locations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Cleans, disinfects and reprocesses endoscopes and accessory equipment. Identifies and reports potential and real problems with endoscopes ensuring properly functioning equipment.

· Assists in transporting patients within the department.

· Clerical responsibilities include answering the telephone, relaying messages, maintaining patient log and responsible for entering patient charges when requested.

· Responsible for maintaining department inventory including but not limited to stocking supplies, linen, galley supplies and charting material.

· Responsible for the physical upkeep of the department and equipment on a daily basis.

· Communicates effectively and appropriately with staff, physicians, patients, families and other healthcare team members.

· Efficiently sets up and tears down procedure rooms.

· Available to quickly obtain supplies, equipment and medication (non-narcotics) as directed.

· Answers patient call and emergency lights.

· Utilizes computer applications; ordering supplies and processing charges.

· Participates in Quality Monitoring by recording daily, weekly and/or monthly required reports.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

· Participates in orientating and mentoring new clinical personnel; primarily with handling and cleaning/reprocessing of endoscopes and procedure room set up.

· Floats to other Endoscopy locations to cover based on patient volumes.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· High School graduate or GED equivalent.

· Previous experience with patient care preferred.

· Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers

· Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REOUIREMENTS:

(Constant = 67-100% of workday, Frequent = 34-66% of workday, Occasional = 33% or less of workday)

CONSTANT

· Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

· Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to be considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

· Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s)in any direction.

· Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time, manual cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes and accessories.

· Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.

· Pushing/Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion. Using a steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

· Lifting: Raising objects from a lower position to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles. This includes but is not limited to frequently lifting cases of disinfectant, patients, linen, Olympus light sources, and dilators.

· Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers, rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

· Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers, manual cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes and accessories.

· Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal range. Ability to receive detailed

information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such

as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.

· Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers,

specifically with manual cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes and accessories.

FREQUENT

· Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.

· Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by

touching with skin, particularly fingertips.

· Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities

in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers

accurately, loudly, or quickly.

OCCASIONAL

· Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:

· Heavy work: Exerting up to 65 pounds of force occasionally and / or up to 50 pounds of

force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

VISUAL ACUITY REOUIREMENTS:

· Preparing and reading written documentation and electronic display.

· Good eye-hand coordination.

· Use of peripheral vision.

· Ability to work with micro instruments.

· Ability to use computer terminal.

· Ability to visually inspect patients, equipment and environment.

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS:

· The major items of equipment used are as follows: endoscopes, endoscope reprocessor, light sources, patient transport carts, wheelchairs, carts, computer terminal and copy/fax machine.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

· The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions. Protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

· The worker is subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as electrical current, exposure to chemical and exposure to sharp needles and instruments.

· The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.

· Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with all it's specifications for preventing contact with the above materials.
