**Responsibilities**
**Work Schedule:**
Monday - Friday, 8.5 hour shifts between 6:30a - 5:30p to include 30-min unpaid lunch
On Call Required - 1 week on approximately every 6-8 weeks
Call Back - minimum 2 hours call back pay
**Job Specific Position Duties:** The duties include, but are not limited to the following:
**CORE Duties:**
• Perform the full spectrum of sterile techniques, setting up surgical trays, preparing and draping patients for surgery, and assisting with post-operative dressings.
• Ensure surgical packs are cleaned and packed for sterilization after every procedure, to include restocking surgical supplies.
• Maintain a clean, safe environment for the patient either by active participation in the cleaning of clinical spaces, operating rooms, and medical equipment, or by guiding other personnel in the environmental maintenance.
**CLINICAL Functions:**
+ The Contractor shall assist the adult and pediatric Gastroenterologist (GI) or the Surgeon in various clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic and emergency procedures. Serves as first assistant to the physician in esophagogastro-duodenoscopies (EGD), colonoscopies, flexible sigmoidoscopies, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placements, push enteroscopy, anoscopies, small bowel push enteroscopies, peritoneoscopies (PEG), liver biopsies, and single balloon enteroscopies, Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasounds (EUS), paracentesis.
+ The Contractor shall assist with all types of dilations (i.e., Maloney dilations, wire guided Savary-Gillard dilations, and endoscopic balloon dilations). Assists with esophageal or colonic stent placements. Assists with endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies. Independently sets up and performs Capsule Endoscopy (esophageal or small bowel), and 24-hour PH studies. Sets up and operates the monitoring and recording devices. Independently performs esophageal manometry, which requires specific training and knowledge of esophageal anatomy and physiology, as well as basic ability to interpret testing. Calibrates equipment as necessary to perform procedure.
+ The Contractor shall prepare a summary of the test results and forwards the report to the physician. Serves as first assistant to the physician in various specialized therapeutic endoscopic procedures such as Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP) with possible therapies such as biliary stone extraction, biliary stent placement, and biliary drainage tube placements. This requires specific training and knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the biliary system including its structures as they relate to specific disease processes involving the gallbladder and biliary drainage system. This also requires specific skill to apply this knowledge in adaptin instruments such as sphincterotomes, wires and balloons in non-routine diagnostic and treatment procedures.
+ The Contractor shall coordinate with the Department of Radiology personnel to secure X-ray and fluoroscopy rooms. Also serves as first assistant to the physician in the specialized treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding. Evaluates the patient’s condition and determines the proper treatment procedure, technique, and compatible instrument adjustments. Independently sets up the electrosurgery unit and/or Argon/Plasma coagulator for therapies.
+ The Contractor shall interpret the physician’s instructions. As required for certain procedures, draws medications, mixes solutions, injects dyes, reads graphic printouts, and sets up needles, syringes, catheters, and/or balloons. This requires a basic knowledge of pharmacology including the classification and administration of drugs, patient responses, and common doses.
+ The Contractor shall recognize potential problems with patient and has the knowledge and skill to initiate corrective action or start emergency Basic Life Support (BLS) procedures and monitor vital signs including pulse oximetry.
+ The Contractor shall maintain, clean, and prepare equipment for use. All of the endoscopic procedures require thorough knowledge and use of specialized equipment and instruments peculiar to surgery and gastroenterology. Monitors equipment and acts, without instruction, to compensate for adverse reactions. In liaison with medical maintenance, and company representatives, makes sure proper in-service training is done and that equipment functions properly.
+ The Contractor shall receive and position patients for various endoscopic procedures. Instructs patients on initial preparation and provides an explanation of the procedures to allay fears and secure their cooperation. Starts intravenous (IV) catheters.
+ The Contractor shall select, sets up, adjusts, and operates equipment for designated procedures. Calibrates equipment as necessary. Must have knowledge of video-processors with narrowband imaging, light sources, and videoscopes. Inputs data into an automated system.
+ The Contractor shall keep abreast of the latest technical changes in the field of gastroenterology through self- directed research of literature, continuing education courses, and participation in meetings.
**Duties- Specific:**
+ Assist physicians, nurses, and hospital corpsmen in the preparation, recovery, and performance of invasive Gastroenterological procedures.
+ Prepare patients for invasive procedures, including preoperative data collection, providing patient education and information before and after procedures. Start intravenous lines as directed by physician or nurse. Monitor vital signs during and after invasive procedures. Records required documentation before, during and after procedures.
+ Assist the physician with invasive endoscopic procedures. Sets up, cleans, disinfects, stores, and troubleshoots endoscopic equipment. Sets up computer-based equipment to accept procedure data and generate procedure reports.
+ Handle endoscopic accessories, including light sources, image generating and retrieval systems (some of which are computer based) and tissue retrieval devices (such as biopsy forceps and polypectomy snares). Apply the techniques of therapeutic endoscopy, including electrocoagulation and injection hemostasis. Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment to ensure proper functioning, ensures that adequate maintenance occurs, and ensures adequate supply of consumable equipment.
+ Handle biopsy tissue and other material obtained from patients during procedures, including proper recording and transport to the laboratory. Interact directly with the Department of Pathology to assure that retrieval is timely and complete.
+ Perform meticulous high-level disinfection to endoscopes and other medical devices per strict manufacturer and industry standard guidelines.
+ Restocks endoscopy supplies in the endoscopy rooms at the end of the day as well as stocks supplies in storage rooms for later use upon arrival of a new shipment.
**Qualifications**
**Minimum Qualifications:**
*** Education:** Certified Nursing Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician preferred but not required.
***** **Experience:** One year of experience preferred but not required.
*** Certification:** NONE. Certification in Nursing Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician preferred but not required.
*** Life Support Certifications:** Basic Life Support (BLS)
*** Security:** Must be able to pass a Government background check and obtain a Government security clearance.
Pay Scale: _$32.00/hr. to $40.00/hr,_ _to be determined based on qualifications, experience, and location_
