Endoscopy Technician

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Staff Nurse provides direct patient care to the endoscopy patient. Assists the endoscopy team with/by positioning patients assisting endoscopy team with procedures preparing and cleaning instruments and restocking of room and cart supplies.


Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIIES:

Assists the Staff Nurse with all aspects of the nursing process including but not limited to assisting with collection of baseline and ongoing assessment data following the nursing management plan and monitoring the patient response to nursing interventions.

Prepares Endoscopy room in a timely manner with all anticipated supplies instruments and equipment.

Assists with endoscopy procedures; anticipates physician needs passes instruments removes polyps obtains specimens and all endoscopic biopsies assists with and operates cautery and other equipment used to control bleeding assists with all methods of dilating procedures assists with and operates advanced endoscopic procedure tools. .

Maintains strict aseptic technique and a safe environment for patients and staff.

Checks all equipment and instruments for proper functioning prior to each procedure.

Demonstrates competence in care of specimens; follows procedure for care and handling of specimens.

Sets up cleaning room to perform activities. According to established instructions and aseptic techniques performs high-level disinfection to clean and disinfect endoscopes and accessories. Performs basic maintenance of equipment troubleshooting minor problems as appropriate referring more complex repairs to the appropriate internal/external sources.

Tests disinfecting solutions daily to ensure effectiveness; adds or changes solutions as necessary.

Prepare and maintain equipment information for regulatory readiness

Assists in obtaining vital signs point-of-care testing ambulation positioning of patients and pre/post procedure care according to department procedure.

Cleans and prepares room between cases and after the last case; restocks as needed. Cleans and prepares instruments and equipment for sterilization. Maintains cleanliness of work area including ensuring refrigerator is maintained clean and free from spills.

Assists in the transport of patients to and from Endoscopy.

Performs designated treatments under supervision according to Nursing Department policy and procedure.

Assists in the overall function of the Endoscopy unit under the direction of the Staff Nurse.

Ability to perform responsibilities in emergency/code situations including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Prepares and maintains records and reports related to activities including equipment use for tracking equipment sent for repair and sterilization; solution testing/changing etc.

Participates in hospital/department quality improvement activities.

Maintains patient confidentiality.

Performs other related duties as required.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

High school diploma or equivalent. Current certification in Basic Life Support required. Current RI registration as a Certified Nursing Assistant or experience as an Endoscopy Surgical or other relevant technical role preferred. Completion of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates Inc. (SGNA) Program also preferred. GI Technical Specialist certification expected to be completed within one year of date of hire.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and sensitivity to cultural diversity in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Six months� related experience in an outpatient procedural setting preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physicians� offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Any hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Works under the supervision of the staff nurse within the scope of Hospital and Endoscopy policies and procedures. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
