Position Overview:

Performs the role of GI endoscopy technician on all general endoscopy cases. Assists the Endoscopist in all procedures and provides high quality assistance in the endoscopy suite. Assists with the preparation of endoscopy procedures, anticipates physician needs during endoscopy procedures, and assists with the clean-up of the endoscopy suite. Assists in the cleaning and sterilization of the endoscopes.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience Six months experience working in an Endoscopy unit.

Other Credentials: AHA BLS. Non-Licensed must obtain before end of orientation period

Knowledge and Skills: Ability to deal with multiple tasks in a rapidly changing environment. Possesses knowledge of aspects of GI endoscopy procedures incuding ERCP and brochoscopy. Proficiency in improving room turnover time.

Special Training: Six months training in endoscopy. On the job training with related healthcare experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSAssists physician and RN with endoscopic procedures as directed by the interventional endoscopist or circulating RN, where appropriate. Assists the circulating nurse with implementing a plan of care to include positioning, confirmation of procedure, care of specimens, and room turnover.Anticipates the need of Endoscopist, using knowledge of endoscopic procedures, which includes passing instruments and other items appropriate to the procedure. Assists the Endoscopist in operating accessory devices and instruments under the direct supervision of the Endoscopist.Establishes and maintains an organized field. Ensures procedure room is kept neat and clean throughout patient procedure.Maintains log books for decontamination solutions, scope tracking and scope usage. Demonstrates appropriate set up of equipment. Handles equipment with care and realizes value of equipment. Accepts responsibility for keeping equipment properly functioning. Performs basic trouble-shooting for equipment and instruments when not functioning properly.Properly identifies patient prior to transport following established Capital Health guidelines. Transports Endoscopy patient safely to the Endo Suite, providing patient comfort and privacy at all times. Keeps siderails up at all times for patient safety, endures brakes are engaged when not transporting. Assists patients to and from bathroom in Endo suite as needed.Adheres to the policies and procedures in "clean" techniques in the endoscopy unit, and aseptic techniques where appropriate and takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, condition, or break in standard clean technique is observed and reports information to the nurse manager.Maintains endoscopic equipment, including cleaning and high-level disinfection where appropriate. Understands and follows safety standards of hazardous materials. Mixes decontamination solution using gloves, goggles and fluid barrier gown. Assures fans and ventilating system is functioning. Follows MSDS guidelines for splash or spills. Maintains biohazard labels on tubs of decontamination solutions.Functions independently in setting up procedure room and equipment for all endoscopy cases according to physician preference and patient procedure.Obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins. Performs basic trouble-shooting for equipment and instruments when not functioning properly.Restocks assigned endoscopy room with designated supplies. Completes all assigned tasks in an organized and thorough manner.Transports specimens as directed. Disposes of trash and linen, exercising universal precautions.Responds appropriately to patient/physician complaints. Maintains effective working rapport with co-workers, physicians, patients, family and other hospital employees.
