The Opportunity

Our award-winning Business and Investor Advisory (BIA) team, recognised as the European Technical Advisor of the Year for the last four years is recruiting! We are seeking an experienced consultant to work on a variety of projects in the thermal power, nuclear power, cogeneration and bioenergy sectors. With teams in London & Manchester you can join either office where you will work on a hybrid basis.

The candidate will be working on a range of UK and international assignments in the power generation and waste and bioenergy sectors. Our mandates range from small scale distributed generation to multi-utility portfolios spanning across large geographies. The technologies that the team covers include combined cycle gas turbines, nuclear power, battery storage, biomass, gas engines, waste to energy (incineration, gasification, anaerobic digestion), geothermal and district heating. In addition to typical technical due diligence and project development assignments, there will be an opportunity to play a role on mandates in corporate finance and energy economics. There would also be the opportunity to undertake projects in other sectors where we have an established capability: renewables (wind, hydro, solar), utilities (gas, water, electricity), for example.

This role will involve short overseas business travel opportunities to mainly Europe and Africa!

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

The role will include advising on the technical, commercial and operational issues, primarily in the power generation and waste and bioenergy sectors. You will be responsible for co-ordinating and producing discrete sections of technical and commercial/market due diligence reports from a diverse team, across the organisation and potentially including external experts. You will also be writing technical specification, evaluating tenders, negotiating and writing contracts - particularly, engineering, procurement and construction and operations & maintenance contracts. You will also be reviewing technical reports (condition assessment and root cause analysis etc.), specifications and drawings to understand key technical and commercial risks; and liaising with specialists to reduce the impacts of risks, while providing commercial inputs into business plans such as operating and capital costs and operational inputs (i.e. efficiency, availability, heat rate etc.).

Requirements:

Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Office applications. A good technical understanding of a range of equipment and processes used in the energy infrastructure sector and key issues affecting each technology. A good understanding of the economic, commercial, environmental and regulatory issues of the sector is required. Enthusiasm to develop technical and commercial knowledge outside of power generation sector by working on projects in the renewables and utilities sectors would be advantageous. Degree and Chartered (or approaching) qualification in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent economic or financial discipline.
