Engineer, Instrument Development and Support

The Engineer I/II works closely with a cross functional team to help improve the existing NanoString platforms, primarily CosMx and GeoMx. The Engineer is responsible for supporting and servicing instruments within R&D, and secondarily assist in next generation development as needed. The work involved will be highly interdisciplinary including elements of optics, fluidics, hardware control, and software. The individual in this role will regularly interact with hardware engineers, molecular biology scientists, software engineers etc. Ideal candidate for this role will be self-motivated, keen on learning to troubleshoot hardware problems and excited to work in an everchanging R&D environment.

Essential Duties:

Maintain and support NanoString Platforms within R&D onsite in Seattle. Engage with various stakeholders and resolve issues as they arise in a timely manner.Provide feedback to internal teams to address failure points and make system reliability improvementsSupport in the development of new instruments, measurements, testing, and analysisSupport both commercial systems with official procedures and prototype systems with less documented informationFor commercial systems, complete new equipment installations, preventative maintenance activities, and emergency repairs with proper supporting documentation in compliance with Quality Assurance proceduresCommunicate with internal customers, both in person and via electronic means, and interact with systems for tracking logging issues/status.

Minimum Qualifications:

B.S. in biomedical, mechanical, electrical or related engineering fieldStrong troubleshooting skills. Specifically, in the areas of: General electronics, electromechanical systems, automation, liquid handlers, computers, and associated networking componentsCapable of working independently and in a team environment, communicating relevant scientific data effectively in oral and written format, working in a timely manner to meet defined deadlines.General understanding of IT and basic networking setupAbility to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move approximately 80-100 lbs. on an infrequent basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

2-5 years of experience working as an engineer in the life sciences industry or relevant field serviceHands-on  experience with laboratory instruments preferably in the biotech / life science / automation field(s).  Experience performing development/maintenance/repair work on prototype instrumentsAbility to diagnose software/hardware errors in prototype systems preferably those used for biomolecular assaysFamiliarity with fluorescence microscopy and automated mechatronic systemsExperience with automation of hardware testing through software programming (Python or C# preferred)Experience in fabricating prototype parts through machining/3D printing will be a plusExperience with mechanical CAD software (preferably SolidWorks or equivalent)Experience with automating basic data plotting and analysis

Target Base Salary Range:

$74,000-$105,000

 

Base salary is an integral part of NanoString’s total compensation package.  Base salary considers an individual’s skills, experience, and competitive market value.  The base salary range represent what NanoString pays for a job within a salary grade based on external market data in comparison to similar positions from other companies in our industry. Employees generally enter a salary grade at the lower-to-mid-point in the range.

Employees generally enter a salary grade at the lower-to-mid-point in the range.

 

Other compensation elements include a discretionary annual bonus, incentive compensation for sales roles, comprehensive benefit plans and paid time off, including designated holidays.
