**Meet HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding**
With more than 25,000 employees – including third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation shipbuilders – HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia. We’re the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Our diverse and innovative team of professionals ranges from skilled trades to project managers, engineers and software developers to solution architects, technical subject matter experts, and system users. Anchored in our rich, 135-year history, we collaborate together at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration of the most powerful and survivable naval ships in the world. Want to be part of the team? Apply today! We look forward to meeting you.
**The Role**
The Propulsion Plant Engineering Activity (PPEA) group provides mission-driven engineering and design technical services supporting the U.S. Navy's Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP).
As an electrical engineer on our team you will lead teams that use graphical modeling tools as well as native C/C++ code to develop real-time software models of various electrical machines (power electronic converters, synchronous generators, induction motors, etc.) and their embedded control systems (voltage regulators, speed governors, etc.). Through this work, you will grow your propulsion plant knowledge by gaining a unique understanding of the design and operation of various naval reactor and steam plant systems and components - while tackling exciting and challenging assignments.
Our team prides itself on achieving and maintaining value for our customers by delivering timely and comprehensive technical solutions supporting the sailors and maintenance personnel who operate and maintain the U.S. Navy fleet. We do this by building a learning community where you can work with diverse individuals, explore new ways of thinking, and expand your (and our) capabilities by taking ownership over increasingly complex tasks.
Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Becoming the subject matter expert on the design, operation, and maintenance of assigned components and systems.
· Directing efforts to model shipboard electrical systems using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and Siemens NX.
· Applying engineering expertise to resolve fleet issues by providing verbal, written, or hands-on guidance to sailors and shipyard personnel. Limited travel may be required.
· Coordinating team efforts to develop technical recommendations and reports, often requiring integration across multiple engineering disciplines.
· Developing procedures to be used by Navy personnel to safely operate/troubleshoot components and systems.
· Managing a team of people making design changes and modifications through all development stages, including requirements definition, design, qualification testing, and integration.
· Effectively communicating technical concepts, statuses, and risks to teammates and customers.
Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.
