About the Opportunity

The selected candidate may be offered a position within the same job family, at a level that is lower than what was posted. This will be determined based upon the results of the interview process which considers the candidate's skills, work history, experience level, and other relevant qualifications.

This position reports to the Manager, Evaluation, Measurement and Verification.

This position will be classified as hybrid, with Akron, Ohio or Greensburg, PA as the preferred FE reporting location. 

This position provides engineering support for the evaluation, measurement, and verification activities necessary to comply with legislative and regulatory requirements for energy efficiency, demand response, building decarbonization, and electrification programs implemented across all FirstEnergy utilities in MD, NJ, OH, PA, and WV. This department is responsible for demonstrating both compliance and cost-effectiveness of programs by providing accurate, transparent, and consistent assessments of methods and performance. 

Responsibilities:

Developing regulatory filings; providing technical expertise and industry intelligence on energy efficiency, demand response, building decarbonization and electrification technologies or practices; analyzing and developing program initiatives; performing or managing evaluation, research and analysis of program impacts, costs and cost-effectiveness assessments.  Reviewing evaluation documents (e.g., evaluation reports, studies, customer surveys) for technical merit and communicating results to the Energy Efficiency Implementation team and program implementation vendors.  Managing, analyzing, and communicating state and regional protocols and standards for assessment of energy savings, peak demand impacts, and greenhouse gas emissions for all programs and measures. Securing, coordinating, and overseeing evaluation contractors conducting evaluation, measurement and verification activities and analysis at residential, commercial, and industrial customer facilities and ensure proper coordination with Statewide Evaluator responsibilities and requirements.  Coordinating and performing analysis related to program operations using actual and forecasted data to monitor program performance, inform energy efficiency program planning, develop and implement evaluation activities, and to recommend changes to maximize program savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions to support achievement of compliance requirements.  Building relationships with independent and statewide evaluators, implementers, regulators, and internal and external utility peers to successfully direct and perform EM&V activities to drive progress toward achievement of mandated goals. Participating on cross functional working groups providing support for program design, project implementation, QA/QC processes, database management, development of energy evaluation tools, and EM&V strategies. 

An employee hired at the Engineer IV level will be expected to perform all the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner. Further, the Engineer IV level employee will be assigned additional responsibilities related to those above. 

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.  Electronic(s) Engineering Technology degree requires a PE license to meet position requirements. Minimum of three (3) years engineering experience is required.  Relevant work experience includes energy engineering, modeling, auditing, or related energy efficiency industry experience; mechanical systems support; project design/management experience; technical support/analysis of customer utility meter data and billing; consulting and/or design with a focus on sustainability, decarbonization, greenhouse gas emissions, or electrification; previous EM&V experience is a plus. Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) considered a plus. Ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently to deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.  Must be capable of driving projects and tasks to completion.  Solid computer skills with competency in Microsoft Office products (particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).  Detail-oriented, accurate, and able to learn, analyze and interpret complex technical information. Demonstrates a questioning attitude and desire to continue to learn and produce results. Able to work both independently and in team environments. Possesses strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to customer satisfaction. Self-motivated, self-starter, customer-focused, and results-oriented.  Possess and maintain a valid state-issued driver's license. Willing and able to travel throughout the service territory periodically, and willing to work extra and/or irregular hours during unusual circumstances.

Qualifications at the Engineer IV level in addition to above include: 

Minimum of five (5) years engineering experience is required Strong verbal and written communication skills with an emphasis on understandable, clear, and concise technical writing and presentation skills. Ability to effectively present complex subject matter to all levels of management. Understanding of energy efficiency, demand response and load management strategies, products and technologies, customer electricity usage patterns, rate pricing structures, and state regulatory policies.  Viewed as a technical expert in engineering disciplines, Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and other business-unit specific applications.  Demonstrate prior experience managing multiple projects/programs simultaneously, integrating corporate strategic concepts, managing financial results, presenting to senior management, and interacting with customers.  Ability to lead by example, coach others in effective decision making, and demonstrate superior analytical and technical abilities.
