Overview This position is responsible for performing, under supervision, challenging engineering work in PPL’s Substation Engineering Department. Works under supervision in the field, office and home office in a variety of functions and challenging but structured work that develops competencies in substation design. Responsibilities include performing physical/electrical and relay design, oversight of internal and external engineering resources, and managing the budget, schedule and deliverables for assigned work. Responsibilities Performs engineering work on PPL’s substations, ranging from 12kV to 500kV. Uses existing procedures to investigate, evaluate and assist in producing technically correct and cost-effective designs and recommendations that solve ongoing problems. Develops technical expertise with the design of substation equipment, including but not limited to power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, AC and DC systems, microprocessor relays, and protection schemes. Provides engineering expertise and technical support during the planning and construction phases of large, complex substation design projects. Oversees contract engineers and coordinates engineering activities across multiple engineering disciplines and work groups, including but not limited to Standards, SCADA, Protection, Civil, and Design Engineering. Builds relationships that will facilitate knowledge transfer, cross functional knowledge of related work groups, and ability to present work products effectively. Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using well defined engineering procedures, which may include routine and diagnostic testing of components and systems, and engineering studies. Takes initiative to continually expand and improve technical and business skills. Assists in a variety of topics which include developing innovative procedures, improved design recommendations and new or better equipment purchase recommendations. May be assigned an Electric Utilities emergency and storm role. This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work afterhours, outside of your normal schedule. All other duties and projects as assigned. Qualifications Engineer I: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university. Engineer II: All Engineer I requirements, with a minimum of two years related experience. Engineer III: All Engineer I and Engineer II requirements, with a minimum of five years related experience and working knowledge of utility industry and regulations. Principal Engineer: All Engineer I, Engineer II, and Engineer III requirements, with a minimum of ten years related experience and working knowledge of utility industry and regulations. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer License or Engineer in Training Certificate.
