Summary Engineer II | Renewable Generation Engineering Arizona Public Service (APS) is seeking a skilled and motivated Engineer II to join our Renewable Generation Engineering team, where you’ll play an essential role in ensuring the reliability, implementation, and operation of our utility-scale solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and microgrid assets. As part of this team, you’ll work closely with interdisciplinary groups to optimize system performance, manage critical loads, and drive operational continuity. The ideal candidate will bring experience with utility-scale solar, BESS, microgrid design or operation, and diesel generators, along with a collaborative approach that enhances reliability and drives innovative solutions. Key Responsibilities: Technical Engineering & Design Support: Provide technical engineering, design, economic, and analytical expertise to support long-range system planning and project development. Reliability Optimization: Ensure high reliability and continuity across utility-scale solar, BESS, and microgrid systems, implementing preventative and corrective measures for critical loads. System Performance Optimization: Monitor and improve system efficiency through data analysis and performance testing, driving enhancements in renewable energy output. Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including operations, maintenance, and planning, to align on project objectives and technical requirements. Engineering Analysis & Problem-Solving: Apply advanced engineering methods and analysis to assess system performance, address operational challenges, and support engineering requests, proposals, and presentations. The ideal candidate will have: - Experience in utility-scale solar, BESS, or microgrid engineering, with a proven record of enhancing system reliability and operational efficiency. - Strong technical knowledge of renewable energy systems, including BESS, solar energy, and microgrids, with experience in diesel generator integration preferred. - Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives and resolve complex challenges. - A track record of applying engineering methods to solve technical problems, optimize performance, and support strategic decision-making. - The capacity to handle both the technical and analytical aspects of engineering tasks, with skills in data analysis, performance testing, and economic evaluation of projects. - Effective communication skills, with experience presenting technical findings and recommendations to diverse internal teams. - Work is performed with general guidance over specific engineering design, modifications, and technical assistance. - Provides limited technical guidance and leadership to others as needed. Minimum Requirements Minimum Qualifications: + A four (4)-year Bachelors degree in an Engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) PLUS + Two (2) years working experience in Engineering-related positions. Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications: + Problem analysis/resolution techniques. + Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, practices, methods and safety standards in the area of applicable engineering discipline. + May be subject to shift work. Approved Engineer degrees: Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Math, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Architectural, Structural. (A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by Engineering department management.) Major Accountabilities 1) Analyzes and prepares a variety of data, technical reviews and evaluations, trend analyses, short to long-range technology assessments, products and services, investigations, product/specification verifications to aid decision making. May present findings to a diverse group of management, internal staff, customers, vendors, etc. 2) Identifies, communicates and advocates resolution of technical concerns while adhering to sound engineering principles during evaluation / resolution of the conditions. 3) Challenges conditions and decisions when needed to ensure plant systems, engineering designs, project controls and oversight of work has high technical quality, is cost effective, in compliance with established standards, codes and regulations, maintains future reliability, satisfies customer requirements, budget and schedules to meet or exceed all reasonable or agreed upon customer service levels. 4) Interfaces with customers or cross organizational team members to assess their needs, determine the scope of the project, obtain necessary data to make key decisions which may require consultation with external or internal customers or employees. 5) May provide oversight of engineering technical programs by managing the program requirements, working with cross organizational partners, reviewing and internalizing operating experience and coordinating corrective actions to ensure engineering program elements continue to remain healthy. 6) Provides support for projects and modifications that will increase operating efficiency. 7) May review design and documentation of projects to ensure compliance with design specifications, schedules and any regulatory requirements. 8) May assume responsibility for small- to medium-scale projects which include planning, designing, scheduling and coordinating all facets of the project. 9) Checks and reviews standard analysis, evaluations, and investigations of others. 10) May provide technical guidance and leadership to less experienced engineers. 11) Remains cognizant of current technology and engineering developments as well as industry and competitive developments. 12) Maintains high individual level of engineering technical capabilities and expertise by formal education, self-study, and awareness of technology advances. CIP Requirement: This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access. Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).
