The primary purpose of the Location & Surveys Unit is to provide Statewide engineering and geomatics analysis in the development of transportation facilities and acquisition of property in accordance with the best professional engineering and surveying practices consistent with all laws and regulations governing the State Highway System. The Location & Surveys Unit is looking for an Engineer II to serve as an Assistant Geomatics Training and Support Engineer.
In this position you will:
·Research and analyze more complex survey related procedures, policies, or problems in field surveys (route location surveys, construction, GIS).
·Assist with the development and maintenance of CADD workspaces, standards and SOPs.
·Develop and provide high level field and/or office training to engineers and advanced level survey technicians in all departments within NCDOT.
·Train survey staff in both field and office procedures.
·Test and evaluate field survey hardware including various robotic and non-robotic total stations, Mobile and Terrestrial LiDAR, different GNSS equipment, digital levels, and data collectors and associated software.
·Assist in developing statewide standards to be used in NCDOT field and/or office survey procedures as well as the analysis of this data.
Perform analytical evaluation and resolution of more complex survey related problems when encountered by survey crews.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

·Experience utilizing the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and Route Location Surveying as it pertains to the different phases of highway design and the duties of the various Units, Branches, and Divisions of NCDOT.
·Experience with geomatics engineering utilizing surveying technology such as GNSS, LiDAR, Sonar, Photogrammetry, UAS and CADD.
·Experience with other Department-wide topics such as Highway Design and construction as it relates to roadway, hydrology, structures, utilities, rail, and environmental.
·Experience developing, presenting and/or training in field and office survey procedures.
Experience communicating technical information in a clear and concise manner to varied audiences in writing and orally.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
