Job Title: Engineer III, Inspection Systems and Automation

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Department: Engineering, Research and Development

Reports to: Manager, Inspections Systems, Testing, and Support

Flex Work Eligible! This position qualifies for the Flexible Work Policy. Employees receive 75 workdays annually to work remote! The initial amount of days is prorated for the first year based on start date. 

General Description / Purpose:

The Engineer III, Inspection Systems and Automation provides technical support to the Engineering, Manufacturing, and Operations departments. Assists in the R&D testing and implementation of new and existing products. Works closely with the Engineering and Software Design teams to provide input on product improvements.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Functional & Technical Skills

Apply knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers, Power Distribution Modules, and Human Machine Interface software. Maintain, set up, and troubleshoot communication networks like Ethernet TCP/IP, Modbus, and RSNetworx. Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. Analyze electrical schematics, diagrams, and drawings to troubleshoot and interpret system performance. Install, set up, and troubleshoot GNSS inertial systems. Troubleshoot machine vision and optical systems. Provide failure and root cause analysis to the Electrical, Mechanical, and Software design teams. Identify, recommend, and implement design and maintenance changes that reduce life-cycle costs, improve productivity, and/or enhance the safety of personnel. Provide documentation, technical report writing, and electronic media presentations. Identify and direct corrections and/or revision of schematics. Advise, conduct, and report on testing for R&D projects.

Communication

Communicate with and lead peers to effectively improve processes and resolve problems.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Automation, Robotics, Electronics, or similar

Experience:

7+ Years of working experience troubleshooting electrical circuits using electrical schematics. 7+ Years of working experience troubleshooting automation control systems.

Licenses/Certifications:

Obtain and maintain Railroad Certifications Possess or ability to obtain a DOT Med Card Possess a valid Motor Vehicle Drivers License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of or ability to quickly become familiar with Railroad products and services, particularly about inspection and maintenance of tracks and structures. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications for preparing technical reports. Competency using test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and network analyzers. Skilled in reading and interpreting electrical, electronic, and logic schematics. Skilled in operating systems including Windows, Linux, Unix, and embedded systems. Skilled in the design, setup, and troubleshooting of communication networks. Skilled in automation systems and controls. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to operate high rail vehicles.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master’s degree in Automation, Electrical, or Robotics Engineering

Experience:

5+ years of experience working in a railroad environment. 2+ years of experience with leadership.

Licenses/Certifications:

Possess or ability to obtain Radiographer License. Possess or ability to obtain a Commercial Driver License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Welding and Metal Fabrication Skills. Familiarity with 3D modeling software, Solid Works, Inventor, etc. Knowledge of machine vision systems. Knowledge of GNSS inertial and odometry systems. Familiarity with ERP systems, SAP, IFS, etc.

Office deskwork, requiring sitting, walking, using phone & computer. May lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally. Up to 50% travel including international. Ability to work long hours and maintain a flexible travel calendar. Ability to be on call for extended hours. Can tolerate variable and sometimes challenging conditions during visits or inspections of company equipment in a railroad environment. Can tolerate working in a fast-paced environment with time-sensitive deadlines.
