Job Description

Location/Division: South San Francisco, CA Genetic Sciences Division (Onsite)

How will you make an impact?

A System Design Engineer III at Thermo Fisher is responsible for developing the next generation of tools for genetic analysis. Join our platform engineering group supporting hardware and consumable new product development across multiple business units in the Genetic Science R&D Division. As part of the platform engineering team, you will creatively apply the principles of systems engineering to exciting project opportunities. The role changes with the phase of product development: Requirements analysis, system characterization, coordinating product quality & reliability engineering, and demonstration of performance specifications, culminating with project release to manufacturing.

​Key Responsibilities:

Lead feasibility studies, error budgeting, modeling, prototyping, and system characterization.

Coordinate with cross-functional teams in the execution of large-scale new product development programs.

Author development plans, manage timelines, and lead system integration.

Translate customer needs into product requirements, driving development from concept to launch.

Qualifications:

Perform root cause analyses and refine workflows to meet performance targets.

Bachelor’s in engineering (or related field) + 5+ years R&D experience in life sciences or clinical instrumentation OR Advanced degree (PhD/MS) with + 0–3 years proven experience.

Proven expertise with Python, MATLAB, or other object oriented coding and data visualization tools

Expertise in prototyping, system integration, and debugging complex systems (optical, electrical, mechanical, fluidics, software).

Experience in requirements analysis, risk assessment, verification, and validation.

Knowledge of genetic tools and workflows (e.g., Sanger sequencing, qPCR, NGS, sample prep, DNA synthesis).

Proficiency in systems engineering principles and science-based innovation.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $104,600.00–$156,876.00.
