The Roadway Design Unit is comprised of a diverse team whose primary purposes are to produce and review roadway design plans, lighting and electrical plans, and provide technical expertise on these subjects to internal and external partners. We are looking for an advanced level engineer within the Design Development and Support Group whose primary charge is to assist the Team Lead as they manage staff in the development and review roadway design plans.
In this position you will:
+ Prepare and review roadway design plans and public meeting maps throughout the project delivery process using sound engineering judgement.
+ Prepare and review calculation of quantities used to generate cost estimates required for the allocation of funds for TIP projects.
+ Serve as a technical expert on roadway design related questions from consultants, Divisions, and other units to clarify design requirements.
+ Assist in the development of roadway design scopes of services and development of project schedules for internal and consultant led projects.
+ Assist in the preparation and negotiation of workday estimates for roadway design work with consultants.
+ Evaluate consultant performance on roadway design submittals.
+ Assist the technical design lead, for projects developed by internal staff, to identify potential project risks and ensure they have been appropriately coordinated with other technical leads and resolved.
+ Advise and counsel lower-level engineers, and other employees, in their day-to-day work to assure a team approach to their work responsibilities.
+ Identify and provide training and professional development opportunities to team members, including Transportation Engineering Associates and summer interns, to ensure they are growing as engineers and professionals.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
+ Knowledge of civil engineering principles (especially as it relates to highway design), AASHTO guidance, Roadway Design Manual, Bridge Policy, NCDOT Standard Drawings and Specifications.
+ Experience in the development and review of engineered design plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles and maintenance standards, codes, and statutes.
+ Demonstrated ability directing the work of and training lower-level engineers and Transportation Engineering Associates.
+ Experience using Bentley highway design software and workspaces (MicroStation, GeoPak, Open Roads Designer, and Corridor Modeling) or Civil 3D.
+ Experience establishing and tracking progress of tasks and project deliverables to ensure timely completion.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
