The Roadway Design Unit is comprised of a diverse team whose primary purposes are to produce and review roadway design plans, lighting and electrical plans, and provide technical expertise on these subjects to internal and external partners. We are looking for an advanced level engineer within the Roadway Design Support Services Team.
In this position you will:
+ Develop and maintain the Roadway Design Unit Open Roads Designer (ORD) workspace standards which includes the creation of line styles, templates, cells, feature definitions, etc.
+ Coordinate with other NCDOT technical units, the CADD Integration Team and NCDIT to ensure a holistic approach to ORD implementation.
+ Develop training materials including manuals, articles, job aids, flashcards, and videos related to roadway design ORD modeling and plan production and publish documents to the Roadway Design Unit website and/or the ORD Support Portal.
+ Coordinate the activities of consultants and lower-level engineers in the development of training materials.
+ Prepare workday estimates, develop and monitor schedules for deliverables, review deliverables, and test procedures.
+ Develop and conduct ORD related presentations and training workshops for various users either in a classroom or online setting.
+ Provide user support to NCDOT staff and private engineering firms by troubleshooting issues and responding to inquiries related to the usage of MicroStation, Geopak, Corridor Modeling, and OpenRoads Technology (ORD) and other software platforms used in the production of roadway design plans, and 3D models.
+ Provide support to the Roadway Design Unit by participating in initiatives, groups, and meetings in support of Digital Delivery, workflow development and other business processes.
+ Assist in training lower-level engineers and Transportation Engineering Associates to develop their knowledge of roadway design and design software platforms.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

+ Experience producing engineered models, plans and construction estimates for transportation infrastructure projects in compliance with AASHTO guidelines, NCDOT Standards and specifications, and NCDOT, state and municipal policies and procedures.
+ Experience using Bentley’s OpenRoads Designer software and ORD workspaces or Autodesk Civil 3D.
+ Demonstrated ability preparing technical training documentation and presentations, and communicating the information in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
+ Experience training lower-level engineers and/or Transportation Engineering Associates.
+ Experience providing timely customer service and working cooperatively with other units, divisions and Departments to troubleshoot issues and generate effective solutions.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
