We are looking for a Gasification Engineer III or Senior Engineer to maintain operational processes and procedures by following PSM Guidelines. The individual selected for this role will have fundamental knowledge of engineering concepts. The physical work locations will be Duke Energy’s Edwardsport Integrated Gasification Combined Cyle (IGCC) located in Knox County, Indiana. Edwardsport’s 618-megawatt IGCC facility is one of the cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power plants in the world. Facility is located near Terre Haute, IN, Bloomington, IN, and Evansville, IN.

 

This position can be filled as either an Engineer III or Senior, depending on the qualifications of the applicant.

Responsibilities

Provide technical assistance/troubleshooting in resolving design, operation and maintenance problems and contact internal and external experts as required.

Works within a PSM Facility and following PSM Guidelines

Work within a team environment to provide support of plant equipment. The successful candidate must possess the ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.

Successful candidate should model Environmental, Health, and Safety principles, focus on unit availability and reliability, and develop simple engineering solutions to complex problems.

Successful candidate should exhibit willingness to provide leadership and mentoring to less senior engineers and Co-op students.

Other duties include the preparation of various professional reports and documents such as specifications, calculations, procedures, and equipment evaluations.

Conducts engineering and related studies.

Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, engineering, and professional knowledge, skills and performance.

Participation in Process Safety Management activities such as management of change, process hazard analyses, and incident investigations.

Basic/Required Qualifications (Engineer III)

Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program

Minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience

OR a Master’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering

Basic/Required Qualifications (Senior Engineer)

Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program

Minimum of six (6) years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

OR a Master’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering

Desired Qualifications

Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations

Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering Exam or Professional Engineering License

Demonstrated ability to perform process support and field troubleshooting of equipment.

Demonstrated familiarity with coal gasification and associated equipment.

Demonstrated experience with high energy piping

Demonstrated ability and experience with material handling equipment including but not limited to conveyor systems.

Demonstrated ability to create, review and comment on equipment specifications and drawings

Demonstrated organizational/planning skills, with ability to multi-task and set work priorities

Demonstrated ability to develop simple engineering solutions to complex problems, while satisfying applicable code requirements

Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills with craft, supervision, engineering, and management personnel

Demonstrated familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel, API, OSHA, ASTM, and ANSI Code requirements

Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.

Experience in the utility and/or process industries is preferred

Familiarity with PdM/CBM practices, including vibration, flow, thermal, tribology, electrical, etc.

Proficient understanding of thermodynamic principles, heat and mass balances, and steam properties.

Proficient in applying principles of project management.

Experience with working in a PSM covered facility.

Adaptable to various work environments and work cultures.

Willingness to attend training classes to further technical aptitude, as well as conduct training classes to help broaden knowledge base and experience.

Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills with craft, supervision, engineering, and management personnel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Valid Drivers License required

Occasional overtime work.

Office and plant environment - exposure to hot and cold temperatures, noise, fly-ash, coal dust, fumes, confined spaces, extreme heights, and working around pressurized, rotating, and energized equipment

Base work hours are dayshift, 8 hours per day; 5 days per week. There is also an opportunity to work a 9-80 schedule. Additional overtime may be required to support projects, plant outages and emergent problems

Must be able to support / participate in site specific engineering on-call rotation.

Ability to pass a background check and pass a drug test

Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.
