Engineer - Journey Level 1
DescriptionThe Engineer - Journey Level 1 will assist the higher-level engineer. This position can be assigned to one of the multiple offices within the Roads Maintenance Division and performs engineering duties in Construction, Structures/Bridges, Traffic or Administration overseeing construction of roads, bridges, pumphouses traffic maintenance and stormwater systems. The Journey Level Engineer, under the general direction of a Senior Licensed Engineer and/or Division Director; will independently perform various complex assignments related to any Road Maintenance Operational need such as Traffic and Construction inspection of the Roads Maintenance Division projects and activities. May be responsible for supervising and coordinating the work of lower-level engineers, and other employees. All engineering classifications within the Roads Maintenance Division creates a pathway to advance, promote, transfer or change career path. A Journey Level Engineer I will be eligible to be reclassified to a Journey Level Engineer II upon obtaining their PE/PS. The Engineer- Journey Level 1 assigned to Structures/Bridges in Roads Maintenance will assist in the day-to-day operations of Bridge Inspections, bridge load ratings, pump house inspections, bridge maintenance crew supervision and maintain/update MiBridge website.Required TasksAssist with checking daily plans of the bridge maintenance crew, materials used to do bridge repairs, evaluations of bridge repair methods.Assist with checking inspection reports of bridges, pump houses attenuator and dams as they are due to stay in compliance with the State and Federal Authorities.Assist with checking RFA for bridge scaling, bridge detail inspection and bridge load rating requests.Assist with routine bridge inspection. Fracture critical inspection, scour inspection, element inspection and detail inspection (section loss of steel and concrete members) pump station inspection, attenuators and dams as required.Assist with review project priorities, determine scope of work and prepare repair/maintenance plans for bridge and building sections.Assist with field review of on-going repair projects for bridges, pump stations, attenuators.Assist with reviewing, maintaining and updating inspection report in MiBridge website and RFA's for all county bridge inventory lists.Assist with calculating and updating all county bridge load rating and report to MiBridge website.Assist with generating repairs costs for county bridges, pump stations, attenuators, and dams.Assist with procuring the services of engineering consultants and manage their work as it relates to bridge safety inspection, pump stations, attenuators and dams.Assist in attending MDOT/County meetings relative to structure maintenance.Understand and adhere to the collective bargaining agreement.Assist Structure Maintenance Engineers daily with variety of tasks stated above.Attend refresher classes for bridge inspections.Attend refresher classes for bridge load rating.Attend bridge conferences and seminars.Make decisions on repair materials.Make decisions on repair scheme.Design of repairs.Design of rehabilitation.Design of temporary supports.Other related duties and tasks as assigned.QualificationsEducational Requirements/Experience RequirementsBachelor's of Science Degree in Civil/Construction Engineering from an accredited college or universityPossess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe and acceptable driving record (no more than 7 points)More than 3 years' experience including at least (18) months of Roads Maintenance Construction/Design (located in the Roads Maintenance Division under Traffic Operations, Roads Maintenance, Bridges/Structures and Administration)Additionally, experience should include and (3) months in Engineering Survey.Passed FE license exam; or alternatives accepted by State of Michigan or 5 years' experience including (9) months' experience in Construction Engineering and (9) months of Design Engineering (without FE).
