The Role

The selected individual will function with minimal supervision and provide technical leadership and direction for specific engineering projects encompassing a variety of Machinery systems including Steering & Diving, Mast & Sail and Auxiliary Machinery. The individual will be expected to review product drawings, apply engineering principles, and interact with construction trades to resolve engineering problems in a manner that meets cost and schedule objectives. As a team lead, the individual will review and assist development of work by less-senior team members to ensure high quality products.

 

Typical responsibilities will include:
• Develop and review Technical Work Documents (Inspection Reports) and related supporting documents (Bill of Material, Liaison Action Record, Departure from Specification) for execution of Trades work.
• Provide deck-plate troubleshooting and issue resolution for complex shipboard systems.
• Review Special Emphasis Program (SUBSAFE, Level 1 Material) requirements to determine implementation of necessary controls.
• Interface regularly with value stream members and customers:  Various Engineering Departments, Material Procurement Teams, Trades, Project, Navy, Vendors and Planning Yards.
Perform ship checks and should be comfortable with ladders and heights.  Able to acquire a Secret Security Clearance.

 

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

 

 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

• Excellent verbal communication skills and technical writing ability to provide concise technical directions for craftsmen.
• Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously, and to prioritize work to meet schedule, cost, and quality objectives.
• Experience resolving construction issues with trades.
• Expertise in resolving technical problems across multiple disciplines. 
• Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team and also independently with minimal oversight.
• Experience with in-service Submarine work and construction is preferred.
• Knowledge of the various Special Emphasis Programs is preferred.
• Excellent MS Office skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

 

A working knowledge of shipyard operations, including structural fabrication, component fabrication and assembly and final outfitting, and the relationship between the three. A working knowledge of dimensional control systems and practices is also highly desirable. 

 

Effective oral and written communication skills are important for this position.  Technical submittals of design proposals, engineering calculations and analyses, drawing reviews, operating instructions, test procedures, maintenance procedures, work deferral requests, departure from specification requests, etc. .  Collaborative work with other internal/external design and/or test engineering personnel; including NAVSEA, Naval shipyards, General Dynamics-Electric Boat, vendors, etc.  On-site resolution of issues encountered during construction or overhaul, possibly resulting in some travel.
