Engineer/Specialist

Position Description

he Pipeline Engineer provides comprehensive technical support for pipeline systems, primarily managing pipeline integrity projects, including in-line inspections, anomaly evaluations, and repairs. This role is a regional technical resource, potentially supporting measurement, process, and compression activities. The ideal candidate should exhibit professionalism, tact, and strong interpersonal skills while collaborating with individuals of varying backgrounds and expertise.

The individual must possess project management skills used in developing project documents (such as project scope, schedule, budget forecasting, cost tracking/analysis, and risk identification/mitigation). The candidate must be capable of communicating this information using well-developed written and verbal skills. Secondary duties involve multiple small pipeline and facility projects and engineering studies. Daily activities include:

Pipeline Integrity and Remediation: Work closely with Operations, Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Business Development, and other departments to manage in-line inspections and remediation efforts and maintain and improve the integrity of the company’s pipeline infrastructure.Project Management: Oversee multiple capital and maintenance projects, including inspection, testing, and repairs. Secondary responsibilities include pipeline construction, replacement, and abandonment projects and facility projects related to compression, automation, measurement, corrosion mitigation, and gas processing. Provide engineering support to operations, as required.Scope Development and Contractor Management: Develop scope documents, manage the bidding process, select contractors, coordinate permitting, and oversee contractor activities. Effectively prioritize workload between multiple projects and the ability to take on new projects and shift priorities on short notice.Documentation and Budgeting: Generate project alternatives and cost estimates, secure project funding, track expenses, and complete project closure documentation.Compliance and Safety: Apply company standards for safety, regulatory compliance, and efficiency. Review projects to meet OSHA, Kinder Morgan Engineering Standards, and Maintenance Procedures.

Position Requirements

Education:

A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is preferred. However, seven years of relevant experience in natural gas or petroleum pipeline design, project management, and maintenance may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Project Management: Strong project management capabilities, including documentation, cost estimation, and risk management.Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups.Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in pipeline fabrication and construction, blueprint interpretation, and safety-focused work practices.Computer Skills: Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including familiarity with AutoCAD or similar software.Adaptability and Independence: Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and work independently under minimal supervision.The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and complete background check, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.

Working Conditions:

Travel: 25-40% travel to field sites and offices, including occasional overnight stays.Work Schedule: Eligible for a hybrid schedule (M-W in-office, Th & F remote when not traveling).Availability: Must carry a cell phone and be available to respond during both working and non-working hours.

Certifications/Licenses/Registration:

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurer.

Physical Demands:

Capable of working outdoors in Southern U.S. climates with required Personal Protective Equipment.Able to climb ladders, work on elevated platforms, and engage in physical fieldwork at compressor facilities, pipeline rights-of-way, and meter stations.Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activities and driving to project sites.

Preferred Experience

Pipeline Integrity and Remediation: Experience with in-line inspection tools, pipeline codes (49 CFR 192/195, ASME B31.8/B31.3), pressure testing, and high-pressure pipeline remediation. Understanding of pipeline in-line inspection tools used to assess the integrity of natural gas pipelines and pipeline remediation and repair methods.Technical Calculations: Proficiency in MAOP studies, relief valve capacity calculations, and sizing of control valves.Software Skills: Experience with engineering drawing software (e.g., AutoCAD) and advanced math capabilities.Knowledge of pressure testing of natural gas pipelines.Knowledge of natural gas storage facilities and treatment processesExperience with high-pressure natural gas pipeline construction and remediation.Advanced computer skills.Advanced math skills.Proficient in financial management and accounting, accruals, and estimation
