Engineer to Principal Engineer, Additive Manufacturing

Would you like to play a vital role in the adoption of additive manufacturing (also known as 3D printing) technologies in the marine and offshore industries? ABS (American Bureau of Shipping, www.eagle.org) is a leading Classification Society driven by its mission of promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment. In fulfilling this mission, ABS leads research and develops guidance and requirements focused on the safety of implementing new technology in the marine and offshore environment.

The Singapore Innovation Research Center, located in Singapore was established to enhance our global network of technology centers and supports our mission of safety in the region and around the world. The center projects include topics on smart and autonomous functions, modelling and simulation, additive manufacturing (AM), and many more.

As an AM Engineer in ABS, you will have the opportunity to be part of various innovative projects that are poised to transform the offshore and marine industries. You will participate in or lead research and development projects with regional and global clients, discuss opportunities and steer ABS’ directions in AM for the offshore and marine industries.

In this role, you will be accountable for the success of your projects, setting the path forward, and defining objectives and key results, in close alignment with your stakeholders. You will build success through close collaboration with partners and clients, leveraging your domain expertise to deliver cutting edge solutions for AM.

 

What You Will Do:

Conduct research and assess the maturity of new technologies pertaining to AM with a focus on: Design for AM Material characterization procedures and requirements Materials inspection and testing AM processes and technologies Post-build processes Materials inspection and testing Participate and/or lead in projects relating to AM Develop guidance and classification requirements for the marine and offshore industry on topics relating to AM Support ABS technical community on queries regarding AM Maintain and demonstrate thought leadership through technical publications, conference presentations and panel discussions. Participate in industrial committees to development and enhance technical capabilities.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

Minimum bachelor’s degree in engineering, material science, or other relevant disciplines; Masters or PhD in appropriate discipline will be preferred. Relevant experience in AM eg research, service bureau, solution provider, end-user application etc Minimum 5-year relevant experience Relevant experience in shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, offshore energy company, university, or classification society will be a bonus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge and experience in AM processes, test methods and end-use applications within the maritime and offshore industry Knowledge and experience in design for AM, including digital data flow, topology optimization, generative design, and its related tools Good understanding on computer-aided design, including tools such as Solidworks, Siemens NX, Inventor or similar Demonstrated experience in the development or assessment of AM related topics Metallurgy and processing knowledge with understanding of material types, selection and performance assessment Knowledge of materials testing techniques for metallic materials i.e. tensile, toughness, fatigue etc. Knowledge of characterization techniques such as microscopy, fractography etc Understanding of broader manufacturing methods within the maritime and offshore industry Exhibit high level of professionalism and work ethics Problem solver and team player who is motivated to solve technical challenges and meet project deliverables in a timely manner Marine and offshore industry experience will be a bonus Excellent technical, interpersonal, communication, and writing skills in English
