Job Summary
The engineering internship provides a supervised experiential learning opportunity for an individual, enrolled in a college or university to further enhance the traditional classroom curricula. This type of program integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with the practical application and skills development in a professional setting. This opportunity enables the student to gain valuable experience and to make professional connections
Essential Functions
• The engineering intern assists to coordinate activities of general construction and/or technical projects for the Transporation Department including:
• Design and plan preparation for roadway design, sidewalks, intersection improvements, and signal design.
• Work with traffic signal timing, capacity analysis, signal phasing, and signal inspections.
• Work with the deployment of new technologies, for count stations, vehicle detection, PTZ cameras, detection cameras, and emergency preemption systems.
• Signing and pavement markings.
• Evaluate safety issues and recommend remedies.
• Ask appropriate questions for understanding work assignments and demonstrate hard work to meet deadlines and expected quality outcomes.
• Demonstrate professional workplace behaviors including reliability, timeliness, strong communication, appropriate work attire, confidentiality, self-initiative, teamwork and appreciation.
Minimum Qualifications
• Must be enrolled in an accredited engineering program at a college or university, as documented by submitting an unofficial transcript at the time of hire, and at the start of each term for the duration of the internship.
• Must have completed at least four (4) full terms or semesters.
• Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
• Must be available to work for the entire duration of the internship program.
• Must be available to work a weekly work schedule averaging 20 – 40 hours per week.
• The engineering internship program is intended to provide a working opportunity for students for a minimum of 4 months to a maximum of 24 months.
• Fingerprinting required.

+ Salary offers above the minimum of the pay grade may be considered based on qualifications.
+ Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared emergency and/or declared emergency. On an incident-by-incident basis, the County’s Administrative Office will make the determination as to who will be required to work.
