Engineering Intern - Certification, Compliance & Regulations
Position Overview Certification, Compliance & Regulations Intern – Summer 2025 We’re International. We build International trucks and engines and IC Bus® school and commercial buses, as well as develop Fleetrite aftermarket parts. The Certification, Compliance & Regulations Team at International is responsible for meeting all obligations of vehicle and powertrain certification. That includes vehicle testing, engine dynamometer testing, battery electric vehicle certification, data reporting and production compliance testing. The team works in a dynamic environment, interacting with agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) to ensure compliance with regulations. In this role, a candidate would collaborate with senior members of the team to learn regulatory test protocols including emerging technology requirements, perform data analysis, execute vehicle and powertrain testing and interact with various product development groups. About the Intern Program 12 week program with start dates on: May 12 or 19 or June 2 40 hours per week Must graduate between December 2025 - May 2027 Responsibilities Guide vehicle certification requirements Perform required vehicle and dynamometer testing Process/document/standardize the certification process Learn and utilize various regulations including National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), EPA Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and California Code of Regulations (CCR) Support team with data analysis and summary reports Execute testing to certify conventional powertrains for the United States market Execute testing to certify batteries for electric vehicles Help interpret new regulations and how they apply to new vehicles and powertrains Analyze emissions data to ensure the necessary regulatory requirements are met Capture and analyze vehicle CAN messaging to meet regulatory requirements and verify diagnostic information Perform testing on customer-aged vehicles and powertrains to ensure emissions and diagnostic compliance Minimum Requirements Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree Additional Requirements Qualified candidates, excluding current International Motors employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. International Motors does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B or F-1 status) Desired Skills Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field Minimum required cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and teamwork abilities Basic understanding of vehicle body structures and systems is a plus Previous internship or project experience in automotive engineering is preferred Strong communication and organizational skills Critical thinking and problem solving Previous internships or work experience is a plus Ability to work independently Benefits and Compensation We provide a competitive total rewards package which ensures job satisfaction both on and off the job. The expected compensation hourly pay ranges for hires into our campus intern openings is $24 - $38/hour. The hourly pay rate is based on year in school and is non-negotiable.
