About the team and the role:

The Query Science team at eBay plays a pivotal role in eBay's core business, working across various domains, including search query understanding, retrieval, recommendation and navigation applications. Our team comprises experts in applied research, data, and software engineering, fostering a culture of rapid innovation with no shortage of challenges for motivated individuals.

We are looking for a strong engineering leader who will manage a hard-working team, providing clarity and direction. This individual should excel in collaboration with partners, build a positive team atmosphere, and effectively remove obstacles. Below are the key responsibilities and qualifications we are looking for.

What you will accomplish:

Manage, mentor, and grow a team of software and machine learning engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Define the short and long term technical direction for the team, set and communicate priorities, and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to support the broader organizational goals. 

Provide technical leadership and guidance in designing and implementing machine learning solutions for search products, focusing on model tuning, service optimization, and data pipeline efficiency. 

Manage complex projects that may span multiple quarters, utilizing key business metrics to inform product and technical decisions, while effectively communicating insights to partners.

Manage technical debt and make long term technical architecture decisions, while ensuring alignment with the product roadmap.

Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess team effectiveness and drive delivery.

Multiplies the effectiveness of others by facilitating effective cross-team collaboration.

Empower inclusive leadership so that everyone, regardless of background or industry experience, feels valued, empowered and engaged.

What you will bring:

MS/PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.

8+ years of experience in software design and development, with a strong foundation in computer science concepts such as data structures, algorithms, and system design.

3+ years of experience in a technical leadership or management role, overseeing projects and guiding teams.

Proven expertise in building and maintaining machine learning pipelines and services at scale. 

Self-motivated and fast learner, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 

Proficient in agile development methodologies and committed to maintaining high engineering standards.

Effective at delegating tasks and driving proactive execution.

Strong interpersonal skills and an appreciation for diversity in teamwork.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
