Engineering Manager
Purpose/Summary Manages the engineering department, including duties associated with planning engineering programs, reviewing design and method recommendations, purchasing equipment, and ensuring that engineering activities align with organizational objectives. Essential Duties/Responsibilities Responsibilities shall include but not limited to: + Manages all aspects of the engineering/maintenance technical resources and personnel + Manages department resources to support daily manufacturing support as well as programmed growth and continuous improvement initiatives + Evaluates business case feasibility and provides input for future business case development + Supports and participates in Akebono Production System projects as required. + Participates in the development of staffing plan and labor budgets for their Department + Develops and controls technical departmental budgets. + Develops and controls continuous improvement plans for manufacturing processes and equipment. + Develops capital expenditure request and controls capital project expenditures + Support quotation process for manufacturing process, capital, tooling, and manning impact of product changes +   Effective communication skills, both verbal and written at the middle and senior management level. + Ability to professionally interface with customers, suppliers and contractors. + Ability to provide and present comprehensive reports + Plans and formulates aspects of program development and implementation including costs projections, equipment specification and purchasing, reporting and human resource requirements + Approves and submits proposals considered feasible to management for consideration and allocation of funds or allocates funds from department budget + Coordinates manufacturing engineering activities concerned with development and procurement of production equipment that meets Akebono’s requirements in terms of quality, mistake proofing, production rates and product specification + Oversees the commissioning of production equipment ensuring safety sign-off are completed, quality levels are maintained, all product specifications are met and customer expectations are exceeded during product/process launches + Oversees testing of newly installed machines and equipment to ensure fulfillment of contract specifications. + Ensures Safety Risk Assessments are completed on new or modified equipment + Supports development of process training documentation and plans for the manufacturing departments + Develops manufacturing area layouts and manages equipment and facility documentation to include electrical and mechanical "as built" prints & PLC programs. + Must possess the ability to employ appropriate project management tools. + Responsible for Engineering staff development and Succession Planning + Ensures compliance with all safety policies and procedures. + May be required to train others. Education and/or Experience (minimum required for the position) + Requires Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of equivalent work related experience or 10 years of equivalent work related experience in an applicable discipline of engineering/maintenance. + Minimum of two (2) years’ experience supervising individuals working in the Engineering/maintenance field. + Must have excellent communication skills and be proficient in both Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. + Experience in project planning, capital budgeting, departmental budgeting, business case development, and costing for sales quotes preferred. Essential Knowledge, Skills, Abilities + Will act as a knowledge resource and guide for less experienced Engineers, Engineering Techs, and Maintenance Technicians. + Experience in estimating project costs and preparing justification for capital spending. + Ability to work independently, and as a project team member or leader. + Ability to work with vendors to develop work schedules and tasks, and establish vendor and project priorities. + Strong equipment troubleshooting skills + Proficient knowledge of ladder logic development, Servo based motion control, and experience with manufacturing equipment design. + Proficient knowledge of CAD software, AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar + Experience with high volume operations. + Experience with designing part fixtures and tooling. + Able to work with others in a team environment to achieve a common goal. + Able to coordinate and manage multiple projects and resources simultaneously to complete Company objectives.  + Capital management requires knowledge of the funds request process, knowledge of the manufacturing process, the ability to calculate and verify cost savings. + Good communications skills are necessary as all areas require presentations and follow ups with upper management, plant and corporate. Supervisory Responsibilities             This position has direct supervisory experience.  It will provide the team with direction and guidance to ensure projects are prioritized and planning processes provided are in place to ensure project deadlines are achieved.  This includes selecting and hiring associates, training and evaluating associates to enhance performance, development and work product, as well as, addressing performance issues and making recommendations for personnel actions.   Physical Demands/Environment             While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand walk/move; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
