Engineering Manager

Artsy is transforming the art market – the last major consumer marketplace to come online – by aggregating over $30B in commercial inventory on a single platform. Our Engineering team is at the heart of this transformation, unlocking new possibilities for art buyers and sellers around the globe.

Reporting to our Head of Engineering, we’re seeking an experienced Engineering Manager who combines deep technical insight with exceptional people leadership. You’ll be responsible for guiding a diverse team of engineers (junior all the way up through staff) – the team has a variety of skillsets, from mobile to frontend to data and backend.. You’ll drive technical excellence and foster a culture that prioritizes performance, growth, and cross-functional collaboration. This role offers you the opportunity to influence the technical direction of products while actively mentoring and developing your team.

You’ll be joining a cross-functional product team focused on driving top-of-funnel growth by uniting the needs of collectors and galleries. Your role will involve close collaboration with Product, Design, Marketing, and Engineering to deliver value to our users and business by building a high-quality product.

This is a full time hybrid role, with in office attendance required 2-3 days a week. This role is based in our NYC office.

What You’ll Do at Artsy:

Lead a team of 6+ engineers by setting clear goals and cultivating a high-performing, inclusive culture that values open feedback, continuous learning, and innovation.

Own the hiring pipeline to attract and select top-quality, diverse talent aligned with our growth and inclusion goals.

Leverage your technical expertise to mentor on design, architecture, and code quality; actively participate in technical decision-making and code reviews; and identify each engineer’s unique strengths to maximize team impact.

Implement performance management practices that address issues promptly and empathetically, establish personalized development plans, and regularly coach engineers to align individual and team objectives.

Act as a key liaison between Engineering, Product, Design, and other stakeholders by collaborating with peers to streamline processes, drive engineering-wide improvements, and leverage cross-functional insights for strategic staffing and decision-making.

This role is a fit for you if:

You are a seasoned engineering leader with a proven track record managing distributed teams.

You are a technical expert with hands-on experience as an individual contributor, technical lead, and people manager– someone who values high quality code and robust engineering practices.

You are a performance-driven manager who is passionate about mentoring, offering constructive feedback, and driving career development.

You are an effective collaborator who thrives in a complex organization, able to align diverse teams and influence cross-functional strategies.

You’re a champion for diversity and inclusion, committed to building teams that bring varied perspectives to our innovative work.

You have strong opinions, loosely held. You will change our team, and our team will change you.

You feel resonance with Artsy’s vision along with its engineering principles.

This role will be based in NYC.

This role is unlikely to be a good match if you….

Struggle with ambiguity or setting goals and aligning outcomes in a complex organization.

Are only interested in people management and not excited about leading a team to drive impact through technology.

What success looks like in your first 3-6 months:

First 3 months:

Build strong relationships with your team members, direct reports, and peers.

Develop a high-level understanding of the business and become an expert in Artsy’s product.

Understand how your team works and start to monitor and impact team health and performance.

First 6 months:

Drive measurable improvements in your team’s execution, performance, and collaboration.

Become actively involved in initiatives that shape the broader engineering organization.

We know no one is a perfect match on paper, so if you’re passionate about this role, please apply! We’re excited to learn how your skills, experiences, and insights could make a difference.

About Artsy Engineering:

Artsy's engineering principles are open source. We encourage knowledge building and sharing within the larger tech community through open source software, blog posts, and other free resources. Artsy would rather proudly discover (and improve) an existing tool than build it ourselves from scratch. Through our work, we try to create more value than we capture. That means that when we learn something new, we try to share that knowledge through blog posts and open source documentation. A successful candidate will bring their own unique perspective to help us achieve this mission.

Artsy Values

Artsy has five core values that will inform your experience at Artsy.

For the Love of Art: We have relentless curiosity, empathy, and passion for collectors, artists, and the art market. We are here to make the art world more fair and welcoming.

Own Our Outcomes: We are all individual owners of Artsy’s shared success. We are resourceful and resilient, and to get the job done, we each take responsibility for our outcomes.

Lead with Openness: We trust in our teammates. We seek diverse perspectives, communicate authentically, and act with integrity. A more open art world starts with us.

Transform Together: Our mission asks us to challenge the status quo. We embrace feedback, learning, and change so that we can transform our industry, our company, and ourselves.

Impact Over Perfection: Using both art and science, we debate and decide swiftly and iterate on our plans as we learn. To make the biggest impact, we prioritize speed and clarity of action over perfection.
